Since I myself did not learn the same way as other kids when I was a child, I find that it is easy for me to relate to my students. The best thing a teacher or tutor can do is listen and be patient. Every child can learn, it’s just a matter of how. Many of my students have been hands on learners. Even while reading they had to physically touch something in order for it to make sense to them. I always try to find what fits them best and go with it, whether it’s learning geometry from a skateboard or reading while counting out syllables on blocks. All that matters is that it works for them.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from college, I traveled overseas to teach children in a teacher shortage area. There I taught every subject for second grade, middle school English, pre-algebra, 3rd grade history, and drama. Upon returning to the States, I worked one on one with students in 4th grade who needed extra help in reading and math. I then had the opportunity to teach in a Kindergarten classroom where I worked one on one with students who struggled with reading, math, and behavior. I was raised in the Montessori teaching environment, so I am very involved with hands-on teaching methods, and relating subjects to real life experiences. In relation to the tutoring position, I have a year of experience in tutoring grammar school students in math and reading. As a graduate student at Mississppi State University, I was a teacher assistant for 2 years in Introduction to World Geography. These are the only two jobs I have had that are related to job that I am applying for.
Personally, I enjoy everything about education. I believe that if you can educate a person, then doors are opened for them. I am the type of tutor that gives basic instructions, then I allow the student to try a few things on their own. If they struggle, then I will step in and help them. I prefer to go over the same material as much as needed until the student is comfortable with the subject matter. Then, I like to move on to a new subject.
