I have worked with at-risk children in the Chicago Public Schools system to teach a wide range of skills, primarily focusing on college readiness skills, essay and resume writing, ACT preparation, and remedial and advanced reading techniques. I am also highly qualified to teach speech and journalism, and have a year of experience in each as well. I feel I can make the most impact on students when I work with them one-on-one, and so I am excited to transition from the full-time teaching to the tutoring field. I consider myself to be fun and entertaining and very approachable in my teaching methods. My experience as a teacher began in my Church, I taught for 3 years in one of our Sunday School classes. My students ranged in age from 2-11 years old. After graduation from the University of Washington I was unsure if Education was what I wanted to do. So I chose a different path, and found out just how much I loved to teach. I decided to take the certification exam for Reading and Elementary Education I passed the Reading exam and missed the Elem. Ed by 5 points. I decided to go into Adult education to see if it was for me. I began teaching communications at Bates in November of 2009, I now teach Interpersonal Communications and a Human Relations course. I graduated from the University of Washington last year with a BA in Journalism. I've also received an AA Degree from Highline Community College. Unlike many Journalism students, I have experience in arithmetic like algebra, pre-calculus and calculus. I've tutored students in math and writing, from first graders to college peers. I am a very patient, hands-on style of tutor. I take the time and try to explain things to people who have a hard time understanding. I try to gage what the student is struggling with and also what they do understand, so I can quickly pinpoint their troubles and focus on the problem issue. Some kids need more explaining, others need a picture drawn out for them. I am good at finding what method people learn best with.

My teaching style involves being open and relatable while keeping he conversation related to learning and the subjects of importance. I feel like students respond best when they are in a positive work environment and are pushed to be their best. This involves teaching through the Socratic method, of forcing individuals to answer their own questions.
