A Little Bit About Me...

I have an extensive teaching career in the field of Biology that includes different educational levels. I am currently teaching Biology courses at college level. As a complement of my experience, and since all my education was gotten in a Spanish-speaking country, I am perfectly fluent in Spanish language. I authored and coauthored scientific publications and books written in Spanish language as well.
My main goal as an Educator is to expose students to the most current knowledge in biology while at the same time assisting them in the process of developing critical thinking skills. I like to promote a productive learning environment where students feel comfortable and confident to exchange ideas and eager to apply scientific inquiry in individual and group projects.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to motivate and present information, that is unique. For example, what note or bill is the lowest denomination ever printed and has the portrait of George Washington on it? If you gave me the obvious answer of the one-dollar bill, than that would be the wrong answer. The correct answere is the three-cent note printed in 1862. The bill is still legal tender, although it is worth a lot more as a collector's item. I make my students think. For example, what would happen to you, if you took off your spacesuit on Mars? I'm running out of space, but I made you indulge in critical thinking.

Recently I was asked to give a Guest Lecture on Neuroanatomy at Everest College. I wanted to take students on a ride through the nervous system, into subcortical structures, down the spinal cord to synapse onto muscles and organs. I had to cover everything I learned in the past year, in four hours. I was able to compile a set of animations, which played in tandem with my lecture. Rather than simply name structures, I discussed symptoms that would manifest given a lesion to that area, resulting in effortless comprehension by the students. I graduated CSUN in 2008 with honors. I earned BA in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Throughout my educational career I was actively involved in varies associations and research groups. I was always involved in tutoring for varies reasons, helping a friend, volunteering in the association and more often to finance my education.
My teaching style is derived mainly from the students. Some students do better with visual aids and others like repetitions. In any case the goal is to make sure they understand the material. And i always make sure that they learned the concept not just the problem.
