Sociology is one of my top subjects! Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, one of the top three schools in the country

I have nearly a decade of secondary school teaching experience, including public and charter schools, middle schools and high schools. I am highly skilled and qualified to teach Social Science (especially US and World History) and Geo-Sciences, and have sometimes taught both science and social studies at the same school. I worked at Renaissance Academy Charter High School, for example, teaching five different courses before the year ended and the school was closed, as well as CHAMPS Charter High School, both in Los Angeles. I also taught in two large public middle schools (Sepulveda and Belvedere). Prior to this, I worked for more than a dozen years as a college teacher. My past academic/professorial work includes SUNY—Plattsburgh, Santa Barbara and Berkeley campuses of University of California, and California State University campuses at Northridge and Pomona. I have publications ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I tutored philosophy students for a year while in college. I earned a master's degree in early childhood education and taught second grade for two years. I also was a substitute teacher for grades K-8th. Currently, I am a motivational speaker and a mentor through United We Mentor.
My teaching style involves a positive approach. I believe students learn best in an environment that is both positive and challenging. Positive feedback is essential because students are encouraged to take risks and solve problems. A challenging classroom teaches critical thinking skills that are necessary for the global market.

I love to motivate and present information, that is unique. For example, what note or bill is the lowest denomination ever printed and has the portrait of George Washington on it? If you gave me the obvious answer of the one-dollar bill, than that would be the wrong answer. The correct answere is the three-cent note printed in 1862. The bill is still legal tender, although it is worth a lot more as a collector's item. I make my students think. For example, what would happen to you, if you took off your spacesuit on Mars? I'm running out of space, but I made you indulge in critical thinking.

More About This Tutor...

I have earned a bachelors degree in Psychology, passed the CBEST, and have about four years of work experience as a tutor. I tutored students, ranging from grades K-12, in various subjects, but mainly in Mathematics and Language Arts/Reading. Also, in a previous position, I managed after-school tutoring programs for both elementary and junior high schools at the school site, in-home, and public location/library.
Education is extremely important to me. As an educator, I think it is important to not only share one's knowledge, but to be able to adapt one's teaching style for each student. Through my experience, I know it is important to have patience and be open-minded with my students. I enjoy tutoring and being a positive role model to all my students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a variety of degrees and specialties but math is my strong suite. I have tutored friends with great results. I have helped people in math classes ranging from simple math to statistics and even college level math. I love math and English and I also love working with people of all ages and teaching them to love math as well. I feel that teachers make things more complicated than they need to be and I am great at simplifying explanations for people.
I use a white board when teach people because I find people get less stressed out when working with a problem if there is less scribbles on the paper. I also have a strong belief that it only takes one good example to understand the problem so I give the people I tutor one really good generic example of the topic and tell them to copy it down and refer to that example often and I find that it helps a lot.

As a Pre-medical student, studying Neuroscience, I aspire to one day become a neurosurgeon. In my quest, I’ve decided first—to become a surgical technologist. I’ve served as an ST on annual surgical missions to the Philippines and have dedicated two-years to a clinical internship at Valley Presbyterian Hospital. As I advanced my education in Neuroscience I became responsible for biweekly presentations on various topics such as neurogenesis in Alzheimer’s disease, and neuroanatomical correlates in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. I was a Subject Area Tutor for Organic Chemistry and Biology, as well as a Surgical Technology Instructor at Glendale Career College.
Recently I was asked to give a Guest Lecture on Neuroanatomy at Everest College. I wanted to take students on a ride through the nervous system, into subcortical structures, down the spinal cord to synapse onto muscles ... read more

I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching throughout my entire life. I put myself through Cal State Los Angeles, earning a Multiple Subject Credential, Special Ed. I believe in positive reinforcement, and I am very sincere with compliments. I've had much experience teaching any subject to any age K-12. I really like to help people in general, that's the reason why I became a Resident Assistant. As a Resident Assistant I have aided many students with problems they may have in their first year of college, including tutoring them in subjects i am proficient in. I like to see people grow and learn over which is achieved by aiding a person in discovering and cultivating various talents.
My tutoring experience isn't really too official. I mostly just help people with College Algebra around the dorms. I am pretty good with teaching and helping with math, and could probably do it at a High School level. Not actually having a BS probably will just limit me to high school tutoring. With the people skills I have developed working as an Resident Assistant I know I can be effective in helping high school students in math, biology, french, and chemistry.

A Little Bit About Me...

I assess what their difficulty is. I may back track and ensure they understand the basic foundation of the principle they are learning, then move forward one step at a time, as they grasp each concept. Many times, they must understand step one, to complete step two, etc. I love to see people succeed. When a student finally understands a concept, it gives them, as well as me a feeling of great satisfaction.
Currently, I own my own Health Insurance Agency in Tehachapi. I am an Administrative/Management Professional with 20 years experience. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Health Care Administration with a GPA of 3.46. My 11-year old daughter is a straight A student because I worked with her at an early age with studies that were at least 1 - 2 years beyond her current year. I knew she had the intellectual capacity to learn these, and it has paid off for her every year of school ... read more

I graduated CSUN in 2008 with honors. I earned BA in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Throughout my educational career I was actively involved in varies associations and research groups. I was always involved in tutoring for varies reasons, helping a friend, volunteering in the association and more often to finance my education.
My teaching style is derived mainly from the students. Some students do better with visual aids and others like repetitions. In any case the goal is to make sure they understand the material. And i always make sure that they learned the concept not just the problem.

During my years at Gannon University, I tutored for the state-funded CAAP program. I tutored college students in English Composition, French, Spanish, Theology, Philosophy. I also had the opportunity to tutor an elementary student in Math, English, Science and Theology for 2 years. I am well versed in APA format as I have had to utilize this format for my Psychology coursework.
