Teacher with gentle touch - Very good at explaining new subj

Web manager and usability analyst as well as instructor. I have been asked at various jobs to teach training classes to my peers because of my ability to deliver an easy to understand lesson. I've been told I am very good at explaining a topic that someone has no experience with at all. I am on contract with NC States Computer Training Unit.
I try to find the teaching style that is going to work for the student. Are they visual? Do they need to touch to learn? Finding out how to teach them and then helping them learn skills for independent study are just as important as the material.

I began my work, with youth, in 1983 when I worked with incarcerated youth at the Highland Youth Center in upstate NY. I later taught high school social studies at Mount Vernon, HS in Mount Vernon, NY where I also tutored after school. I eventually traveled to Benin, West Africa where I taught at a local British School and taught and tutored at the American Language Center. I have experience teaching diverse populations.

When trying to reach youth (especially with school work they are not particularly excited about), I have found the best strategy is to first find out where they stand with the subject. This typically involves taking the first session to find out a little about the student, what excites and interests them, and what subjects they do or do not like and why. Then it is best to "test" them to see where they are on the subject they need help with. Once I have identified where they are as a student, I can use my knowledge of who they are to relate the subject matter to things they are interested in, thereby increasing the possibility for learning. This has been my strategy with teenagers in the past and it has proven to be very rewarding.
