I believe I'm quite a good teacher because I'm firmly committed to excellence in academic work, but I don't believe in being pedantic or dreary about it. My own interests are quite broad, and I think I'm quite good at finding ways to make academic subjects relevant and appealing to each student's particular experience and worldview. I have loved working with children since I was a teenager. The school of Education in North Carolina prepared me well. I am above all flexible. My license reads K-8 and I have taught Art K-6 for a year, Second Grade for two years in NC. Then in 2001 I taught Title One reading in TN for a year then Fourth grade for three more years. My family moved to Northern VA and I taught Fifth grade there for two years before moving back to TN for a year where I taught 8th grade Algebra, and 7th grade English. Since moving to Maine I have only had oppurtunity to work with alterative special Ed with grades 6, 7 and 8. I have always loved working with children. Through my experience as a special education instructor, I have learned children can learn in a variety of ways. My B.A.in English from the University of Maine at Augusta, where I graduated magna cum laude, and my participation in the ProLiteracy America program as a Literacy Volunteer was inspired by my life-long love of literature. I have taken courses in Interpersonal Communications, Ethics, and Advanced Technical Communications, all of which expand my purview as a tutor. I am an avid bibliophile and am well acquainted with both American and European literature with an emphasis on Shakespeare. I have greatly enjoyed my experience as a Substitute Teacher and Literacy Volunteer as I truly enjoy helping others.
