My first major mentoring/teaching experience occurred in college when I began leading study groups and eventually organizing tutoring sessions with a number of my fellow English, Calculus, and Physics students. I then obtained a position as a youth counselor with the YMCA and quickly moved up to Site Coordinator where I was in charge of my own after school care group, including being in charge of organizing activities and managing youth counselors. I love working with Middle School and High School students. I believe all students can learn Math, no matter how much difficulty they've had in the past. I first assess where they are at and where their particular difficulty is. Usually the difficulty has to do with basics that they forgot or never understood in the first place. I work on this first before moving on to more difficult concepts. I have had much success with this approach. I always try to make the students feel that they CAN do it, no matter what.
After I graduated from UM I interned to become an Architect but didn't like it as much as the study of it. Because of the extensive Math involved and my love of the subject, I decided to become a Math teacher. The subject that students need the most help with is math. I have noticed the differences in difficulty when trying grasp mathematical concepts and have found ways to somewhat cater to their specific trouble areas. It is very important to give lots of examples and practice problems. I think it is most important that I make the student feel comfortable, that I am creative in my teaching methods, and that I ultimately teach the material to reach a full understanding.
