I have worked with at-risk children in the Chicago Public Schools system to teach a wide range of skills, primarily focusing on college readiness skills, essay and resume writing, ACT preparation, and remedial and advanced reading techniques. I am also highly qualified to teach speech and journalism, and have a year of experience in each as well. I am a very patient, hands-on style of tutor. I take the time and try to explain things to people who have a hard time understanding. I try to gage what the student is struggling with and also what they do understand, so I can quickly pinpoint their troubles and focus on the problem issue. The cliche saying of "practice makes perfect" does not stray too far from the core of my teaching philosophy, however I do differ on a key point. I believe that practicing anything (whether or not it relates to academics) can only be done successfully if certain foundational skills are present; just as a baseball player, regardless of inherent talent, will fail if they do not know how to hold a bat correctly, so will an English student fail, regardless of the inherent quality of their thought processes, if they do not understand how to properly structure an essay.
