I consider myself to be fun and entertaining and very approachable in my teaching methods. I never lose patience with students and believe that making mistakes is equally as important as making progress. All students can become better writers with a little hard work and a bit of desire to do so, and I can give them the tools to produce their best writing to date.
I have worked with at-risk children in the Chicago Public Schools system to teach a wide range of skills, primarily focusing on college readiness skills, essay and resume writing, ACT preparation, and remedial and advanced reading techniques. My experience as a teacher began in my Church, I taught for 3 years in one of our Sunday School classes. My students ranged in age from 2-11 years old. After graduation from the University of Washington I was unsure if Education was what I wanted to do. So I chose a different path, and found out just how much I loved to teach. I decided to take the certification exam for Reading and Elementary Education I passed the Reading exam and missed the Elem. Ed by 5 points. If students lack motivation or direction, it’s often because they are trying to perform an advanced task without basic skills. For example, many students know about the “five-paragraph essay” format, but don’t know how to organize the individual sentences. The first part of my philosophy focuses on providing students with these basic skills, as doing so prepares and makes them eager to face their assignments. The second part of my philosophy involves research. When students don’t know something, I’ve found that they will be quick to give up without considering the resources available.
