Ready to love learning

I currently work as a substitute teacher at Riverside Military Academy. I've worked with elementary children and teenagers extensively. My most recent position serves twenty and thirty somethings in their personal and spiritual formation. I have published my writing, acted on stage, spoken before thousands and mentored dozens. My personal intent is to explore life, discover new things, tackle hard challenges and inspire others to do the same. I believe in the value of the individual and don't believe one-size-fits-all.
Adaptive. I have a background in experiential education and believe that the method is not as important as the end result of having assimilated, understood, and taught back the information. I believe in creative learning techniques and hope to inspire a love of learning alongside the discipline of learning itself.

More About This Tutor...

In 2006 I taught graphic design topics at Westwood College. In 2007 I taught the same subject at The Creative Circus (roughly equivalent to an MBA program for designers, writers, photographers, and art directors). In 2008 I taught in the design department for Georgia State University. This summer I traveled to a remote region in India to teach English. I have taught GRE prep for the past 3 years, covering the verbal, quantitative (math), and analytical writing (essay) areas. As a test prep teacher, I have a close knowledge of students' approach to graduate school, and the process of improving their chances of acceptance to schools of choice. I am academically qualified and more especially interested in teaching humanities courses.
The method of teaching I prefer is maieutic, i.e., one which draws knowledge from the student, rather than attempts to place it in him/her from wit ... read more

After raising 4 children, I reentered the work force 5 years ago as a French Teacher, first at Palmer Middle School, then for the past 4 at Kell High School. I chose teaching because of my strong desire to impact young lives and prepare them for a productive and fulfilling future. I teach all levels of French, including AP French. Over the past three years, my AP students have all received grades of 3 or above. I am AVID certified, and attended a week-long training for AP teachers 2 summers ago, during which time I was trained in best practices in the French AP classroom. I have also worked the past two summers as a tutor with LEC.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children because they have such a youthfulness that is full of life and ready to take on new challenges. I have worked in numerous leadership roles and One of the aspects I try to instill within the mindset of children, is that English is not as boring as they may think. I believe that if you capture a child's mind by relating the core subject to something similar they are interested in, then you can teach them anything. I want to show students a new way of learning through hands on methods. I am patient yet firm.

A Little Bit About Me...

I use positive motivation with my students, explaining how subject matter being covered should relate to them and their future successes. I try to link the subjects with current events and how lack of knowledge on specific subjects can cost them either financially or impact their health and well being. For example, when I encounter a senior who is not participating in class, I give them an employment application to fill out, explaining if they have difficulty completing it, they better join the class.

I've been teaching and performing music professionally for over 10 years. Since receiving my degree, I've taught chorus, currently teach private lessons, and provided music services for churches in both NC and GA. My teaching style goes from both pedagogy to description. Once I understand the knowledge of the student, I speak to them on the level of what they know, depending on the age. Since I've worked with students from age 2 to adulthood, I try to relate to students based on their age as well. If the student is not very knowledgeable of music, I tend to explain things to make it plain. Often, professionals tend to speak "over" the student's head with technical words, so t ... read more
