A Little Bit About Me...

I come into contact with a variety of different students with different areas of interest as a public speaking teacher. My teaching philosophy is to recognize that every student needs, wants, and gets something different from their studies, and it is my job to help them do just that. Rather than conduct a “one size fits all” class, I work with my students individually to guide them in their research and help them get the most out of their speeches. I believe it is important for them to choose topics that interest them as a way to learn about an area they already like and become excited about delivering speeches, something that most students fear.

I enjoy working with children and have been working in this field since I entered college in 2004. I have a bachelor degree in Elementary Education with English as a Second Language Certification. I believe a "hands-on" approach is the best way to retain knowledge given all learning styles. If we do it, we will remember it. If learning is considered fun, we want to do it and all subject areas can have an element of fun. Positive reinforcement within a structured environment is my style of classroom management and it works. If a student knows what is expected, knows the consequences, and knows it will be consistent every time, problems decerase.

I would categorize my teaching style as that of a demonstrator or personal model. Students learn in so many different ways, but I feel that most everyone benefits by watching and then doing. I like to demonstrate to a student how to do a certain task or problem and then act as a coach to help the student apply what he has learned to accomplish that task on his own.
