I think one of my greatest strengths as a tutor is my patience with students. I am very attentive to the frustrations that students sometimes undergo and I continue to work with students until they understand the concepts of the lesson, often trying different approaches until I find one that works for that student. My doctoral dissertation examined college-level remedial reading and writing students in an effort to determine if adding online instruction to traditional instruction would improve student performance. My dissertation explored five hypotheses, and I found statistical significance in all five; thereby supporting the notion that adding online instruction to traditional instruction can improve student learning. While I was a doctoral student, I was also a Merit Scholar. I like teaching. I like teaching individuals. I enjoy the challenge of adapting my style and my information to the unique set of skills and experiences that each individual brings along with them. No two people are alike. So I try not to teach each student as if she is just like the last guy. What is called the "Affective Filter" is what I deal with most: that is the part of each student that is unwilling to try. Many people are uncomfortable with anything having to do with Math, for instance. So, I try to make the session as comfortable as possible.
