My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : I have spent many years helping people to do well on the Verbal SATs ... I am an English major and teacher of the language ( critical thinking and reading, composition, grammar and word studies etc.).

I believe learning should always be engaging and meaningful. It is critical to address individual student learning modalities and needs so the student can experience great success. I have always been a teacher of best practices, meaning incorporating those strategies and methodologies which are the most effective. They work because they promote high student investment and engagement.
I have been a dynamic, successful elementary, middle and high school teacher as well as college instructor of Art, English, French and History for many years. I also taught in a two way language immersion school ( English and Spanish) for six years so I can teach Beginning and Intermediate levels of Spanish. While teaching, I have always taken courses in the best practices of teaching as well as courses in subject matter content. I have tutored people of all ages, learning styles and needs in a range o ... read more

English, ESL, Writing and Law Tutor

I have years of experience teaching and tutoring English as a second language, both in the U.S. and overseas. My students have included high school students, community college students, university and postgraduate students, and working professionals of all ages. I have taught speakers of Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Arabic, Farsi and Turkish. I am also an experienced tutor in law, having taught both law and paralegal students in substantive law, legal writing, test taking skills, and LSAT preparation. I also work with business students who are taking business law and business ethics classes.
I adapt my style to your individual needs. Some students prefer to use a textbook, but with others I will provide appropriate study materials. I like to get to know my students so that we can focus only exactly what you need to improve as quickly as possible.

My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : Let's work together to increase your chances!

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. My work will improve writing techniques (including essays and basic writing skills), reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary creativity. For younger children I work with acquiring reading skills, word recognition, pattern recognition, spel ... read more

"A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary" I think that this quote about teaching, in a way, reflects my idea on what teaching is all about. One can be a good teacher, whose characteristics encompass good knowledge of the subject matter, understanding the needs of your students, and the ability to apply this knowledge to students' needs. However, an effective teacher does not only pass knowledge on to her students, but makes herself gradually unnecessary: her learners become independent learners as they progress through a course. As a teacher, I always try to be effective in this sense - I foster independence in my students. At the same time, I strive for excellence which will eventually make me a better teacher. This endeavor caused me to reflect on how an excellent teacher is different from a good teacher. The conclusion I have come to is that a gap between a go ... read more

As a high school teacher for 13 years, I have had a profound impact on the academic and personal success of a great majority of my students. I have won many "inspirational teacher awards" and have been identified by many of my students as the teacher most responsible for their success. They have said that I have made learning interesting, fun, and rewarding for them because I have a unique way of helping students make meaningful connections between academics and their lives. I have taught world history, U.S. history, geography, psychology, study skills, health and core English. I have traveled to 53 countries, been a professional singer, a collegiate national champion in crew, and a triathelete. I have taken a one year leave of absence from my high school and moved to Lighthouse point in order to write a book. I look forward to helping inspire students to achieve great things.

As a ski instructor, I've worked with children aged 3 - 12. Parents frequently praised my patience and ability to remain a calm, controlled and enthusiastic teacher. I believe in maintaining open lines of communication and that a good teacher must always remain receptive to his student's needs and interests. Students should have an interest in the subject and learning should follow from their character. Often times, we are overwhelmed by the expectations put upon us and we need only see our accomplishments within a perspective that incorporates our progress since we've begun.
Throughout my education at UCLA, I took an avid and broad interest in all subjects, and finally chose to complement a degree in International Development with a smattering of engineering physics and multi-variable calculus. My work and extra-curricular experience has been broad and challenging. I've researched ... read more

My doctoral dissertation examined college-level remedial reading and writing students in an effort to determine if adding online instruction to traditional instruction would improve student performance. My dissertation explored five hypotheses, and I found statistical significance in all five; thereby supporting the notion that adding online instruction to traditional instruction can improve student learning. While I was a doctoral student, I was also a Merit Scholar. In addition to my teaching, I have also tutored elementary, high school, and college students in reading, writing, and the understanding of Literature. I have also worked a great deal with ESL students.
My love of teaching is stimulated most when working with students who require the most assistance. Through my study in Educational Psychology, I have learned that all students have their own learning styles; I am able ... read more

I think one of my greatest strengths as a tutor is my patience with students. I am very attentive to the frustrations that students sometimes undergo and I continue to work with students until they understand the concepts of the lesson, often trying different approaches until I find one that works for that student. I believe strongly in the idea that all students have the ability to learn, and that it is necessary to make learning interactive and relevant. I feel that it is important to encourage students, but I also pride myself on not offering empty praise, but rather pushing students to be able to explain how they came to an answer or conclusion. I believe students learn best in a supportive and comfortable environment, which is aided by my easy-going and friendly manner.
My first tutoring experience actually began when I was a high school senior and tutored ESL students at Sout ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I left the business world in 1999 to make good on my goal of completing my degree and teaching. I wanted the strongest foundation possible, so I chose General Studies, sometimes known as "Humanities." Since getting my first credential in 2002, I have taught in a wide variety of classroom settings, including having my own classroom for both Elementary and Middle School. I have taught as a substitute and permanent teacher in Special Education classrooms. I have taught Math, Science and Language Arts.
I like teaching. I like teaching individuals. I enjoy the challenge of adapting my style and my information to the unique set of skills and experiences that each individual brings along with them. No two people are alike. So I try not to teach each student as if she is just like the last guy. What is called the "Affective Filter" is what I deal with most: that is the part of each student ... read more

I honestly believe that creativity is the guiding means of teaching techniques, resources, and assignments. All students require different things and creativity allows for an agility and flexibility that works with different students and keeps the teaching dialogue sustainable. This creativity is of course contingent on lesson plans, subject knowledge, and an array of resources.
I am working toward teaching at the university level and have, of course in the process, taught students at the university level in literature and Arabic. But I enjoy tutoring and teaching students at a variety of levels because the different levels require different creativity and different techniques that create an ability to think on one's toes that feeds the classroom energy and enthusiasm.

As a graduate of UC Berkeley, I have a passion of helping others. During my freshman year in Calculus, I grasped the subject matter pretty well and volunteered to assist peers with homework problems. I enjoyed helping my peers and was excited to see their test scores improve because of it. Secondly, I tutored ages 5-10 at an after-school program for one year in reading and math. Here I mastered the values of patience and kindness. Lastly, in high school, I tutored my neighbor from grades 6-8 three times a week. I received my BS in Business Administration. I write business memos and speak with clients and am experienced in reading, writing, mathematics and elementary science.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a natural teacher, drawn towards learning and sharing my knowledge. I adapt to other people and their situations well. I make difficult concepts easily understandable by finding appropriate ways to express them. I also adjust my teaching format to different courses, designing them to fit my students' needs. As an instructor, my goals are: to have students understand the material, to develop their critical thinking skills, and, occasionally, to want to continue studying the material on their own or in classes. Overall, I find teaching, whether it is in philosophy, English, or another subject like reading or study skills, extremely rewarding, and I look forward to new opportunities to advance with my students for many years to come.

As a graduate from a top-10 university and from graduate school, I know what it takes to get into a top program and succeed at a high level. In the past 5 year, I have been working as a consultant in the environmental industry, but want to take some time off now to explore other interest. I have previously tutored underprivileged teenage girls at the Florence Crittenton Center in Los Angeles for about one-year as a volunteer back in 2001. I found that experience enjoyable but never pursued it much further due to the demands of school at the time. Despite my lack of tutoring experience, I bring a wide scope of experience in the sciences and mathematics that would make me an outstanding tutor.
During the ups and downs of my undergraduate career, I became self-aware of the challenges that a student faces, especially within subjects that are not his/her strong suits. I believe ... read more

As everyone else touts, I can also relate to young adults. My method is simple and effective. I solve problems with my students. As I solve problems I explain the underlying concept/strategy/trick behind the problem. After explaining all the concepts my students and I go through as many problems as possible. I tweak their approach, and if necessary explain again the necessary concept. There is a lot of drilling involved. I assign very small homework assignments so that we do not "start fresh" each session.
I earned my BS in computer science from Washington University. I have prepared three high school students for the SAT. They ended up at Cornell, American, and UCSD. I have also prepared two middle school students for the SSAT. I have taught JAVA and English to high school students as well. I possess strong writing skills. I recognize good writing.
