I am a former Social Worker from the Foster Care system. I realized thern I wanted to work with children, but more as an educator. I have been tutoring in World History since I was 18 years old through a group known as The Society For Creative Anachronism. I tutor mostly in Human Service type classes on a college level, english and history on a high school level. I also work with special needs children from K-12.
I try to make each lesson unique for my various learners. I have been known to teach in historical clothing, using props from the time period and a smattering of words in other languages. I am patient, flexible, enthusiastic and friendly. I put the student first; the syllabus second. I do not want to lose the student and will backtrack to consolidate the fundamentals. I strive to avoid talking down to the student but rather encourage him/her with what they have to offer. I emphasize positives. My approach is explanatory rather than judgmental.
As a Ph.D. level student in Sociology (ABD) with all exams passed, I have 2 years of successful formal teaching experience at the college level. In research papers I have demonstrated excellent grammar and writing skills. My linguistic training includes 5 years of Latin all of which makes me a very language conscious person.
