I enjoy working with students, especially middle school and high school, and seeing them have a "lightbulb moment". This is the moment they finally realize that they understand what they have been struggling with. I pride myself on my ability to provide students with various learning experiences for all subjects. I am a recent graduate of UNCW with a BA in English and a teaching certification in Secondary Education. I not only believe that all students can learn, but that all students learn in various methods. My preferred teaching method is a combination of Constructivism (hands-on, inquiry-based learning) and Behaviorism (rewards and consequences); however, I strive to internally motivate my students, and I find that making work relevant and meaningful has the greatest effect on learning. All interactions with students should be positive (even consequences, not to be confused with "happy" or "non-confrontational"), understandable, and challenging for the student. I have found a great place in teaching, especially tutoring, due to my desire to help other people. I enjoy walking students through new information and giving them a firm understanding of the concepts and facts. I believe that there is nothing outside of a students grasp. I present the information straight forward, then use analogies and metaphors to relate the information to the students on a different level, giving them a more solid comprehension of the material. My teaching style is adaptive. I believe everyone has the capacity to learn. The approach to learning is what makes the difference. Being a mother, I love children and am very patient. I also know that kids have their own distinct personalities and I address each child as an individual person, with their own talents and ideas. There is nothing better than when a person's face lights up, young or old, when they "get it."
