I am a retired college/university professor, and have been tutoring actively for the last six years (privately, as well as in a mentoring program at a community college). When I was in high school I had a lot of anxiety about math. I went back to college late in life and I was terrified that I would have to take a few math courses to graduate. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus.
