Tutor for Regular Elementary and Special Education

I have recently retired after 30+ years as an elementary special and regular education teacher. For the past 15 years I have also worked as a tutor for the city of White Plains. I have done extensive private tutoring for the past 20 years. For 17 years I worked as an elementary special education classroom teacher at New York Hospital in an out-patient day treatment program. This program involved elementary school age children who displayed severe emotional and academic difficulties and were unable to function in a regular school setting.
Multi-sensory, positive reinforcement approach with a focus on student involvment by the use of manipulatives for a hands on approach. I have also employed behavior modification programs in the classroom setting when necessary.

A Little Bit About Me...

I tend to pay a lot of attention to method, using specific problems as examples. Method is more important to me, as it expands to other problems.
I'm a college student double majoring in criminal justice and psychology. I've taken through calculus I in high school and I was considering a math major. I've tutored peers, siblings, and younger students in math, forensic science, psychology, and biology. I'm still learning, myself, but I got all A's in my math classes in high school.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored high school students who are college bound during my undergraduate years at William Paterson University of New Jersey. I also tutored my fellow undergraduates. I then pursued a doctorate and was active in many peer study groups where were tutored each other in neuroscience and organic chemistry. I have a love for science which shows through my enthusiasm in imparting scientific knowledge to others.
My style is dependent on the student. While the end result is having a student understand the material, the way of achieving this varies with each person. Some students require a lot of hand holding while some require a more hands off approach. To achieve understanding I will cater to the students needs.

Elementary Tutor

With each new student comes the opportunity for a new teaching style. Each child learns in a different way.
I have been a tutor at a local elementary school where my students were very successful. As a future teacher, I am learning and growing in the skills necessary to now take on and help educate children in the common core. I have been an assistant teacher, a teacher's aide and an after school teacher. I have worked in many different settings including pre-school, elementary and middle school. My degree also focuses on special education, so I have acquired skills to help focus in that area.

My comments on tutoring Psychology : Degree in Behavioral Science

I have a varied style, which is geared to the learning style of my students. I teach world to text, text to text, text to life.
I was employed by the Lakeland Central School District as a substitute Teacher Aide and later in a full time capacity. I worked for the OASIS Program and later at the Alternative High School. After completing my Bachelor's Degree at Concordia College, I applied for and was accepted into the New York City Teaching Fellows Program. I taught Special Education at a high needs urban high school in the Bronx. This was a challenging and rewarding experience. Many of my students continued on to post secondary schools. I am currently finishing my Master's degree program at City College of New York, expected graduation is May 2013.

I am not a teacher; I am an awakener!

Very skilled in teaching a variety of learning styles across the different areas of the multiple levels of intelligences.
I have taught in the education field since 1999. I am very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with a multitude of learners in a variety of environments. Early in my career I worked with adults that were mentally and physically challenged. I found this very rewarding and decided to pursue a degree in education, which lead me on my journey into the world of Special Education. I began working with children and young adolescents who had a variety of special needs and learning styles; I went on to specialized Autism and Special Education for K-12. After working with young children for many years I decided to branch out to work with young adolescents and adults pursuing their high school equivalency. Psychology is one of my top subjects!

Experienced and New York State Certified teacher. I have over 10 years experience teaching students in grades 1-12 and 5 years experience teaching adults. I also have extensive tutoring experience. I have an MA from Marist College as well as a BA from NYU. I have designed and taught SAT prep classes (verbal/writing portion) as well as developing curriculum integrating diverse domains of knowledge to create a broad, deep and flexible learning experience for students.
I believe that competence and confidence are BOTH important in learning. Students bring their own knowledge and learning styles to the process. It is the teachers job not only to adapt instructional style to best support the learner, but also to help the student understand his or her own learning style and needs.

My comments on tutoring Psychology : I scored a 5 on the AP Psychology exam when I was in high school, took several psychology courses as an undergraduate, and earned my master's degree in developmental psychology.

I have been a private tutor and academic coach since the summer of 2020. Previously, I taught creative writing to children ages 8-18 at Writopia Lab's summer sleepaway camp (2017). I interned with the reading specialist, ESL teacher, art teacher, and speech therapist at Anne Hutchinson School in 2016 and 2017. I helped students struggling with reading and writing. I worked as a volunteer teaching assistant at Sarah Lawrence College's Early Childhood Center in 2016 and again during the 2019-2020 school year. More About This Tutor...

During the past 6 years, I have extensive experiences as a substitute teacher in the public school systems in both CT and FL. I have taught all subjects within grade levels K-12 including special education . I enjoy all age levels of children. In addition, teachers within the school systems have asked me to do some private tutoring for them for their struggling students. I find it to be very rewarding!
I am a well-rounded diversified individual with both corporate and academic environment experiences. I believe that each child is unique and learns in different ways. I value spending time with a child, forming a tutor-student bond, and the learning takes place from there. My teaching style is very interactive and supportive. I am very reliable and attentive. My strong listening skills also play a major role in my success as a tutor.

More About This Tutor...

I am a life long learner, and encourage all students to be life long learners as well. I love working with all children and have a true confidence that all children can learn, although possibly through different teaching styles. I am patient and work well with others (parents/guardians/professionals) to meet the needs of each and every student. I find that the environment in which the student is placed plays a major role in how and what is learned. My main goal is to make a difference in all students' lives and find that the most rewarding parts of teaching derive from the nurturing relationships I forged with every student and the sense of confidence they felt as they experienced success and growth within themselves.
Through my University’s thorough teacher preparation program, I worked with general education students and students with disabilities. I promote the development and w ... read more
