My comments on tutoring ASVAB : Math portion

I have a been tutoring math on at least a part-time basis for over 20 years. I have a degree in Psychology and another in Geomatics (Surveying and Mapping - heavy on mathematics) from the University of Florida. I have received a perfect score on the math portion of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination). Let me put that experience to work for you!
I am very patient, but I expect you to work to his or her full ability and to be honest about your weak points. If you can do most of the work on your own and come to me with what you truly have problems with, out time together will be much more productive.

My teaching style varies with audience. I believe that most students need to first understand what a question is asking, (we all assume what is being asked yet never give it a great deal of thought) then proceed to elaborate on the wrong answer. Study technique is to me a critical element in learning. This usually means SQ3R. I am not a talking head but rather an instigator of thought. I have retired from successful teaching but am still open to tutoring High School and Adult students. I believe I have learned more from my students over the years than from any source.
I have over 22 years of teaching experience at the Secondary and Adult level. I have written and implemented several innovative courses, and redesigned curriculum to include interdisciplinary education. I have addressed several NEA conventions on teaching across curriclum boundaries. My favorite composition of curricu ... read more

I do believe that all children have the ability to learn the subjects however not all children are in the right mind to do so. My goal is to show in real world, understandable terms the subjects we will work on. I believe that if a child is explained the rules in terms and words he/she understands, then he/she will grasp the material and carry it with them into the future rather than trying to cram for an exam with no retention.
I graduated from UNF in 1993 with a Bachelor's of Business Administration in the field of Management. The degree required classes in Accounting, Finance, Algebra and Economics. Mathematics has risen to be one of my preferred subjects, tutoring this subject for a year to date.

My teaching style is a type of facilitator approach. I realize the with every classroom there is middle level of learners the same as lower and higher achievers. My goal becomes aimed at the middle with reserves and encouragement for the lower as well as higher students.I often try ro challenge the classroom wholly and getting to know my students individually. This is key. My goal should be shared by my student instead of mowed over by it. Together we learn not individually.
I began teaching in 1998. My previous job was taken away by forces of nature. I had taken advantage of the Military Troops to Teachers Program with no clear pathway to practice. Until I found myself with a possibility of unemployment. I I applied at a correctional facility and I was hired over the next week. Hence my introduction to the classroom and the world of academia. Over the next five years I was for ... read more

I often incorporate all three of the VAK modalities while teaching, I do this so that each student's learning style is addressed. I truly enjoy teaching children across multiple curriculums and helping them to become academic achievers. I have a nurturing way of teaching, by applying life long experiences to the classroom environment so, that my students can use what they have learned and apply it to everyday life. I believe by providing a positive learning atmosphere in a structure based classroom, children have an opportunity to apply his or her critical thinking and problem solving strategies to foster in academic excellences.

As both a registered nurse and a retired Navy officer, I am an avid practitioner of lifelong learning and a zealous teacher who has vast experience in teaching students in military and private settings. I have gained invaluable insight in teaching both adults and adolescents during my many years as a mental health and medical-surgical nurse. Additionally, my previous instructional experiences in the military superbly complement my abilities in the absolute necessities of education: reading, writing and mathematics. Yes, "the three R's" are truly the basis for a successful education, and I look forward to sharing their importance with future students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I find great joy in watching a child progress in their education. All children are capable of learning at their own pace, and through repetition. Your child will find success and ease in their academics through my assistance. I am patient and understanding, yet persistent. I firmly believe in encouraging a child to discover his/her strengths in order to overcome whatever obstacles may present themselves. I make learning fun by using everyday life siutations parallel to each equation. If more learning were hands-on, more students would be able to apply learned techniques to their situation at hand.
As a college senior, I have accumulated countless hours towards tutoring and mentoring those in need. Whether it's Pre-K, Elementary, Junior High, High School and College students, I spend a great part of my life not just accomplishing goals, but taking the time to extend a hand and bring ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have an intuitive grasp of what an instructor is trying to accomplish. As a result I know how to target the key concepts in a way that combines the key ideas with peripheral ideas to produce not only a better grade, but a better understanding of the material. As a father I know children are quick learners and absorb information very readily but only when it suits them. Therefore I tailor my approach to be as individualized as possible resulting in a one-on-one style that encourages and promotes success through learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love the art of teaching. I can teach in many different waysm I love cooperative teaching and facilitating students and let them feel and analyze he topic is at hand(silent learning). I can be a visual teacher, auditory, kinistetic depending on the students needs and what needs to be demonstrated so the student can understand and not memorize what is being taught. All students can learn some at a faster pace and some may need more time. At the present moment I teach a Transition class which is the advanced level of ESL just before continuing to The GED program and these students are in different levels in this class situation I use cooperative approach and peer teaching.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the key to teaching is communication. Building a connection between myself and the student has always been a cornerstone of my pedagogical style. I believe that most students have the potential to succeed, and that my role as an instructor is to help them to teach themselves -- which is the essence of real learning.
My first instructional experience was when I was 8; I taught my cousin how to read. From there, I went on to tutor as an undergrad and to teach while in graduate school. I have missed the one-on-one aspect of tutoring, and am especially able to help with English, but can work in other areas as well.
