Experienced, unconventional Latin and English teacher

I have over 20 years of experience working as a university instructor and private teacher for students ages 11-50. Most of my experience has been in English as a Second Language programs for community colleges and research universities, including M.I.T. and Tufts University. For the past several years I have been assisting middle and high school students with Latin (I have studied over 11 years of that language) and have also tutored beginning German and English writing.
Personal, humorous, and energetic. I tailor games and activities to each class and do not think teaching directly from a text inspires many to learn. Typical key elements of my courses include flexible lesson planning, personalized tests/quizzes, adding cultural content, and incorporating student ideas as much as possible.

As a graduate of the University of Georgia, I was very much driven to achieve a high level of excellence in education and consider myself an avid and life-long learner and a lover of education in all forms. I have earned a bachelors degree, in both English and Anthropology and a certificate in American Sign Language. I have furthered my learning through volunteer positions in my community as well through my chosen career path. I have been working with chidlren and older students for a number of years: I started as a sport trainer and I continue as a language tutor. Every one has a different way of learning, to which has to correspond a certain way of teaching: this is extremely easy when teaching one-on-one. I believe in having fun while learning!

With my numerous experiences in education, I think I could be a great asset in helping students become more knowledgeable. I have worked as a Tutor, Assistant Teacher, and did a short placement as an Interim Teacher. I can easily adjust to changing environments that will best suit the student’s potential. I was a Tutor in an after school program, and was an Assistant Teacher in a Special Education classroom. I finished an Interim Teaching placement in a middle school A.P. English classroom.
I have a somewhat relaxed teaching style that does not compromise the distinction or respect between student and teacher. I am a huge supporter of the idea that anyone can learn anything that they desire. With that being said, it seems that there should be no problem with students learning mathematics; but there is. Many children have no desire to learn mathematics because they see no relevance for it in their daily lives. I very much enjoy working with children and when I tutor, I enjoy making math more fun and relevant for them. I have had much success doing so, for I have a strong ability to put understanding in students' minds, where understanding did not previously exist. I believe that good education can make a world of difference in children's lives.
