I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. I think patience and coaching are the most important tools in tutoring. Based on my experience, a rule or lesson is better retained if the student is vested in the answer by their own efforts. That being said, I like to give the tool, the hint, or the rule before I ever just give an answer: that way the student has an opportunity to learn the rule or remember the process for themselves while they figure out the answer.
