Experience Summary
I am a mother of 3 children who are all very successful students. My eldest will graduate a semester early from college this month. My middle child is a junior in college and my youngest child is a senior in high school who will be entering college next fall. I speak of my children because I have helped them whenever they have had problems with their studies. When my older two were in elementary school, I was a coach for their Odyssey of the Mind teams. I pride myself on my understanding of grammar and am very good with math as well. I tutored elementary school students as a part-time job in college and later tutored students in my son's class.
Teaching Style
I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. In math, I like to assign the numbers and equations to subjects the learner likes, such as pizza, sports or music, for example. I also find it is beneficial to make references to the different careers one might use the knowledge learned in the child's classes.
