I began teaching in 2011 as a tutor at a local tutoring facility. I quickly realized that I had a gift for teaching and a passion for doing so. I continued to tutor at this facility for 3 years. My schedule remained full as I was in high demand once word got out that there was a good math tutor. I decided to leave the tutoring facility in order to pursue my artistic passions through music. Shortly after leaving, though, I got some phone calls from the parents of previous students asking if I would still teach their children. After some thought, I obliged and began tutoring privately. I follow the teaching strategy of Total Physical Response with commands, and TPR for stories. I find that this gets the students engaged with the foreign language, and they start communicating in Spanish faster than if other teaching styles or strategies were used. I have had good success with TPR and TPRS. The focus of this strategy is teaching language the way a child learns his/her own language, starting with commands, and adding nouns, and adjectives to the verbal commands. Then, we progress into stories, and students interact with the words and phrases of the stories.
