I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. When the student takes for granted a way to solve a problem, they are lost when the problem is presented in a different way. But, if the student understands the WHY, the presentation of the problem does not matter.
As a Cal Poly graduate with a BS in Computer Science, I have had to master most math and computer science course material. My experience is teaching math to mostly older teens and young adults. Knowledge and skills are most permanent when we discover and create for ourselves, so I like to be a guide that leads the student to their own conclusions, rather than take over and lecture. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like when the student works at the board or on the paper instead of me, so that they retain what is being taught. Upon matriculation at Colby, I enrolled in organic chemistry and decided to major in chemistry. I continued my studies in chemistry and additional areas of interest, including math, government, and economics. Before graduating I participated in an NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates at UC Riverside. With the guidance of my primary investigator and a grad student, I gained experience doing research into the fabrication of nano-structures (in this case, reusable and gas-specific sensing devices, or an "e-nose").
