My life experiences included a continued study of wine, currently earning a Certification status with the Court of Master Sommeliers. In pursuing this subject, I was able to execute varied instructive wine events, developing a following of customers at previous jobs. Currently, I am studying for an Associates Degree in Biological Sciences, which required a retake of Intermediate Algebra, where I excelled as top student. My high school math was always at the "AA" or accellerated levels, having completed Trigonometry and pre-Calculus/Physics by my junior year. I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. When the student takes for granted a way to solve a problem, they are lost when the problem is presented in a different way. But, if the student understands the WHY, the presentation of the problem does not matter.

I begin a lesson by asking a student what he or she knows about the topic. If they have any familiarity with the topic I ask about it and confirm or correct their preconceptions. If the subject lends itself to a real-world example or demonstration, I would offer this for thought. Finally I teach the core concept, connecting it to other concepts already understood by the student. There is usually more than one way to teach a concept. I take into account the learning style of the student. Written or diagrammatic methods might be more effective than verbal explanations.
