As a SUNY Oneonta graduate, I sought to continue my goal of becoming an elementary school teacer. I became employed in Schenectady city school district, working in a magnet school for almost two years. As a first grade teacher, I became very experienced and well versed in balanced literacy frameworks. This passed year, all 22 of my students showed impressive gains in their reading/phonics skills assessment based on Fountas and Pinnell, that I was required to give three times a year. Most of my students began the first grade unable to read at level A, which is the beginning of Kindergarten. By the end of first grade, 90% of my students were reading at the beginning of second grade level.
