Having fun and practicality are essential! I have several younger siblings whom I have often helped tutor. I previously worked at a group home for troubled youth and one of my responsibilities was to help them with their homework. I am more experienced with kids ages 12-18 but am able and willing to help learners of all ages! I have recently graduated from UNLV with a BA in fine art with minors in art history and criminal justice. I think patience and coaching are the most important tools in tutoring. Based on my experience, a rule or lesson is better retained if the student is vested in the answer by their own efforts. That being said, I like to give the tool, the hint, or the rule before I ever just give an answer: that way the student has an opportunity to learn the rule or remember the process for themselves while they figure out the answer. I would never, however, let a student stew in frustration if they could not come up with an answer on their own as that only puts up blockers and hinders learning. The most effective way to instruct students is through experience. Unless a student can take hold of a subject for himself and make it his own, he will never master the information.
