I love teaching & sharing new experiences in a creative way!

My teaching style is very open, free-flowing, interactive, and patient. I love to move beyond the theory and into the natural conversation or practice of it.
I was a natural born musician, started playing guitar at the age of 2. Later switched to piano and took formal lessons for 7 years. I have composed scores for several plays and small projects. I still compose music to this day. I gained an interest in French when I was in middle school. From there, I learned it very quickly and continued to build on it through making French films and going on a biking excursion in France. Mon voyage était formidable et j'ai appris beaucoup!

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is flexible depending upon the needs of my student(s). Some students have disabilities that make drilling or repetition styles of teaching and tutoring difficult and tiresome, while other thrive on it. Others need hands on learning opportunities and problems to work through on their own. Regardless of the student’s need, I am a tenacious teacher. If one method does not seem to be working, I will keep trying until I find the right method for the student I am teaching or tutoring.
Throughout my undergraduate studies at BYU, I taught and tutored in Spanish for up 24 hours each week. I have served as a Writing Tutor with UVU for five years now, tutoring in all genres. In April I will graduate with my BS in English and Creative Writing. I worked as a tutor of writing at Austin Community College in TX from 1/07-12/07. Currently I serve as a TA for an Intro to Creative Writing class at UVU in which I grade half of student work and teach once a month. I was accepted to the University of Houston's MFA program this fall, where I will also teach undergraduate composition. I served as Editor-in-Chief of UVU's literary magazine entitle, Touchstones. After graduating from Utah State, I taught 2nd grade for a year at a charter school. It was a good experience, but I wanted the chance to work with students in a variety of settings. During the past school year, I was hired as the Spanish Specialist at another charter school which has been another great experience. Some of my favorite subjects to teach are math, writing, history, music, and Spanish. I have tutored in English, reading, math, and Spanish.
A proverb I once heard best describes my teaching philosophy: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I become." Thus, my goal as a tutor is to help students discover for themselves. That way learning becomes not only more engaging, but more lasting as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe teaching is a noble profession. As a missionary I was a teacher for two years. There was a specified message about Jesus Christ and the incredible potential of mankind. Also, I taught English there weekly to natives (including a class for children only -- I made all curriculum up as we went). Now I work with university professors as a Student Consultant on Teaching (SCOT) for the Center for Teaching & Learning at BYU. Friends may describe me as enjoyably casual and patient. As a recent graduate of BYU in Business Management (finance emphasis) I have been able to show excellence in my own school work. I have a major GPA of 3.85 (including many Accounting and Finance classes) as well as receiving a 4.0 while taking the “finance core” classes. Receiving a score of “5” on both the Calculus AB and BC tests during high school prepared me for college. Previous tutoring includes training new workers for employment positions (including a customer service representative and a restaurant position). While serving a 2-year mission for the LDS church I was able to train other missionaries. I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement. I also point out what was done correctly to boost confidence. Goals are important, as well as establishing a time frame for achieving them.
