My teaching style is very open, free-flowing, interactive, and patient. I love to move beyond the theory and into the natural conversation or practice of it.
I was a natural born musician, started playing guitar at the age of 2. Later switched to piano and took formal lessons for 7 years. I have composed scores for several plays and small projects. I still compose music to this day. I gained an interest in French when I was in middle school. I supervised 5 districts of students, 10 teachers and up to 65 students at one time, while still teaching in the classroom. Additionally, I graded papers for college-level business courses for several years. As part of this experience, I provided feedback on writing, grammar, and content. After graduating from Utah State, I taught 2nd grade for a year at a charter school. It was a good experience, but I wanted the chance to work with students in a variety of settings. During the past school year, I was hired as the Spanish Specialist at another charter school which has been another great experience. Some of my favorite subjects to teach are math, writing, history, music, and Spanish. I have tutored in English, reading, math, and Spanish.
A proverb I once heard best describes my teaching philosophy: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I become." Thus, my goal as a tutor is to help students discover for themselves. That way learning becomes not only more engaging, but more lasting as well.

I worked as a tutor of writing at Austin Community College in TX from 1/07-12/07. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe teaching is a noble profession. As a missionary I was a teacher for two years. There was a specified message about Jesus Christ and the incredible potential of mankind. Also, I taught English there weekly to natives (including a class for children only -- I made all curriculum up as we went). Now I work with university professors as a Student Consultant on Teaching (SCOT) for the Center for Teaching & Learning at BYU. Friends may describe me as enjoyably casual and patient. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe you can only help the student learn if you are willing to take time to "bend down" to their understanding and help lift them up. As a person that easily empathizes with others, it is natural for me to take time to understand the person who I am tutoring. Through building trust with that person I can naturally help them to understand what they may be missing or not understanding. I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement. I also point out what was done correctly to boost confidence. Goals are important, as well as establishing a time frame for achieving them.
