My comments on tutoring Entrance Exams : Exams all come down to prep and organization!

I have always approached a teaching lesson as a learning opportunity. Learning is a fundamental skill. If you don't have your basic fundamentals, your student will have difficulty advancing. So, I always start with basic fundamentals such as; note taking, study skills, and comprehension! All sciences demand the ability to link concepts together. Ex. cells make up tissues, tissues make up organs, organs make up organ systems,etc.....! By understanding the make-up of cellular structures and relating that to tissue functions the students can fully understand a subject. This proves true with all subjects. By impowering the student with good base fundamentals, my students find it easier to link concepts together.

I like to believe that anyone can learn and understand anything. All it takes is a good teacher and effort. I like to work through a similar problem to the one the student is having a hard time with. Once he or she understands the similar problem, I then ask them to do their problem. If they still have trouble I refer back to the similar problem. Once they have correctly done their problem, we do another problem just like it. We repeat this process until they understand how to do the problems and better yet, understand the concepts and why you do certain things in a particular order to get the correct solution.

I believe teaching to be a matter of enablement. The student's immediate goal is to absorb and understand the material, and the teacher's is to make this understanding happen. The primacy of the student's process requires the teacher to mold his or her relationship to each student in subtly but unmistakably individual ways, so the same teaching personality appears to be different to different students. In my case, the approach I strive to extend to all students emphasizes patience in the face of difficulties and confidence that the student's short- and long-term goals, however difficult, are within reasonable reach.

I'm a hardworking individual and I love to help. But I believe that help is a two way thing. I expect the student to help me identify her or his difficulty in a particular problem that way, I can help the student solve the problem and other problems that might arise. I also encourage students to always attempt the problems and in doing so, they discover their potential if they do it right if not, they learn and do it well next time.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with elementary through high school students for the last few years and am able to relate to many age groups. I try to link the subject matter to things that the students are interested in so that they not only understand what they're learning but also gain an interest to learn more and help them stay focused. I give students clues to help them figure out problems by breaking them into smaller pieces rather than give them the answers and am patient as they learn at their own pace. I believe that making learning fun and interesting is the key to good study habits and future academic success.

I recently completed my education to be a communication and English educator at the University of Minnesota - Duluth. Through the program I spent a year as an apprentice at a middle school and high school. At these locations I not only observed, but also conducted the classroom a day each week. Also at this time I spent a day tutoring a low functioning reader one-on-one for the entire semester. The following year I student taught high school English and creative writing. In this year I also spent time tutoring after school in all content areas, (English, writing, science, math, study skills, etc.)
To me teaching is about solving puzzles. Each student needs different devices or strategies to learn at their full potential. This is why I believe in experimenting with how class or a learning session is conducted. I pride myself on my courage to try something new and original in ... read more
