When I was teaching beginner-level German to an adult opera singer, I focused on helping her develop her conversational skills and pronunciation, using English to explain difficult concepts. By contrast, when teaching a beginner-level 12-year-old, I used a total German language immersion approach and built on my student's love of creative writing by asking her to write her own endings to traditional German short stories. In general, I believe in a natural language acquisition approach that gives students opportunities to practice, make mistakes, and learn from them. A Little Bit About Me...

I have two daughters, two years apart, but only one grade apart. They both do very well academically and embrace the process of learning. At home we focus more on learning and how to search for answers than on simple memorization. I have found that this has given Emma and Claudia an advantage over their peers, as neither are "hung up" on what they remember, but focus on how to use what they've learned and to apply it as a tool in learning increasingly challenging and rewarding concepts.
