Motivated, patient, and experienced!

I have different styles for different students. Some prefer one-on-one and some prefer to learn in a group and participate. I am capable of providing my own materials and test questions for students and assist them to learn and master their subject. I am more of an action type of person, if quality of service is not up to your expectation then its free of charge.
I have started my own personal day care/tutoring agency at a very young age. I took care of 4-5 elementary children and held studying/playing session for them at that age. Since Freshman year in high school, I started tutoring algebra and geometry to peers and younger learners in one-on-one study session or group class. Other than privately tutoring, during high school years, I was able to volunteer for Lynbrook High School's afterschool tutoring session. Even during college years, I was in University of California-San Die ... read more

My philosophy of teaching is to train the student to think like a scientist and/or mathematician. It is not just about getting the right answer but rather understanding the fundamental principals of a subject. This enables the student to try previously unseen problems and succeed. I also believe in varying the techniques used. If a student has trouble with their teacher or text books approach, a different method should be explored. Imparting true understanding is a satisfying experience that I always aim for.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper. I seek to impart the critical thinking skills that reveal why those tricks aren't tricks at all, but are instead a natural part of the grammar of math and science.
I graduated from Duke University in 2009 with a triple-major in Biomedical Engineering, Economics, and Mathematics. I have tutored in Economics and spent four years mentoring middle-schools students in Engineering as a Techtronics Fellow.

The best word to describe my teaching is flexible. Students learn concepts in different ways. When each quarter begins and I hold my first discussion, I always start off saying that this time is the student's time. If my teaching style does not work with everyone let me know. If they want more example problems than lecture, I tell them to tell me to change it up. Also, if there is a hard concept to understand I try to explain it in multiple ways that get the same point across, in case someone does not understand it in one way, but may in another.
The number of years teaching and tutoring is a fuzzy area. I am a graduate student and I have been a teaching assistant for about 2 years, which consists of instructing laboratory, discussion hours and office hours. I love learning, and try to impart its joy to all I encounter. Much of that joy is realized by my students in developing and mastering needed and wanted skills. It is a further delight to me that so many of my students do “turn on” admirably as they realize progress in academic spheres they previously found discouragingly challenging. The variety of approaches I have mastered in presenting materials and individualizing practice makes my service as a learning guide perfect for the previously-frustrated student. I love learning, and I never give up on anyone!

I have worked with both military and non-military with my duties in some jobs included helping people with software and computer skills. My undergraduate degree in Mass Communications strengthened my ability to communicate effectively and sparked further interest in education. Since my graduation in 2003, I've completed over 60 units of college classes. I am currently working on a second degree, in Nursing. Exposure to the sciences and many other classes that require extensive reading, critical thinking, communication through discussions and writing papers has prepared me for a tutoring position such as this.
