Motivated, patient, and experienced!

I have started my own personal day care/tutoring agency at a very young age. I took care of 4-5 elementary children and held studying/playing session for them at that age. Since Freshman year in high school, I started tutoring algebra and geometry to peers and younger learners in one-on-one study session or group class. Other than privately tutoring, during high school years, I was able to volunteer for Lynbrook High School's afterschool tutoring session. Even during college years, I was in University of California-San Diego's area holding group and private tutoring sessions with peers and individuals who needs assistance. My strongest area would be biology and chemistry related field. I have tutored for entry level biology courses and also molecular level biology. If you are interested, let me know.

I am a believer of diversity. I don't believe that learning is "One size fits all". I am aware that children come from a variety of backgrounds and their home and outside environment contribute to their success. I am kind, very patient, and I have the ability to motivate students. I will always encourage and not bring students down with harsh words. I will help them find the learning style that suits them the best. I will strive to help them through any academic problems and turn them into solutions they can carry and apply to the rest of their lives. Every child has the potential to be successful, they just need a chance to flourish. I believe I can help guide them in the right direction.

My philosophy of teaching is to train the student to think like a scientist and/or mathematician. It is not just about getting the right answer but rather understanding the fundamental principals of a subject. This enables the student to try previously unseen problems and succeed. I also believe in varying the techniques used. If a student has trouble with their teacher or text books approach, a different method should be explored. Imparting true understanding is a satisfying experience that I always aim for.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have never been someone who "just gets it" when it comes to math or science, and so I understand more than many people who pursued degrees in these subjects just how puzzling they can be. Math seems like it is filled with "tricks" that seem impossible to know unless you were born with some innate gift. When I teach, I seek to show, step-by-step. how to think about a problem as more than a set of symbols on paper. I seek to impart the critical thinking skills that reveal why those tricks aren't tricks at all, but are instead a natural part of the grammar of math and science.
I graduated from Duke University in 2009 with a triple-major in Biomedical Engineering, Economics, and Mathematics. I have tutored in Economics and spent four years mentoring middle-schools students in Engineering as a Techtronics Fellow.

During my years at UC Davis I achieved a high level of excellence inside and outside the classroom, majoring in Economics with a minor in Communication as well as earning All-America Honors in Intercollegiate Golf. I began at Davis majoring in Physics, which led me to take many advanced level math and science courses, eventually settling on Economics, with which I became a master of statistics and through analytical papers developed excellent writing and grammar skills as well. I have not tutored extensively, but have a lot of experience teaching and coaching young people as I have been involved with youth sports and youth development programs for many years.

A Little Bit About Me...

The number of years teaching and tutoring is a fuzzy area. I am a graduate student and I have been a teaching assistant for about 2 years, which consists of instructing laboratory, discussion hours and office hours. I have a BA in chemistry, which is certified by the American Chemical Society, so my study of chemistry covered all the major fields, including the laboratory, so I know applications of most of the theories that are taught. I have been a TA for both General Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.
The best word to describe my teaching is flexible. Students learn concepts in different ways. When each quarter begins and I hold my first discussion, I always start off saying that this time is the student's time. If my teaching style does not work with everyone let me know. If they want more example problems than lecture, I tell them to tell me to change it up. Also, if the ... read more

I love learning, and try to impart its joy to all I encounter. Much of that joy is realized by my students in developing and mastering needed and wanted skills. It is a further delight to me that so many of my students do “turn on” admirably as they realize progress in academic spheres they previously found discouragingly challenging. The variety of approaches I have mastered in presenting materials and individualizing practice makes my service as a learning guide perfect for the previously-frustrated student. I love learning, and I never give up on anyone!

Having a biology and pre-veterinary science undergraduate degree, and now a master’s degree in marine science, I have a great foundation to tutor students in math and science. I have always had strong math skills and can tutor in algebra, calculus, and geometry. A Little Bit About Me...

I have noticed first-hand that teaching is not a one-way street where the teacher transfers knowledge to students strictly from the syllabus. I feel that teaching involves a constant quid pro quo between the teacher and the students – the teacher learns as much from the student as the student does from the teacher. I am a firm believer of a very practical approach to teaching, especially the sciences, that emphasizes ‘learning by doing’, a method that I myself as a student loved and have seen work in students I have interacted with over the years. The outmoded form of classroom milieu, where the teacher stands in an active teaching role and the student sits in a passive learning role is long gone - teaching is interactive, integrative, involving wider latitude of issues that stretches beyond the subject matter, combines theory with practice, and is capable of connecting individual though ... read more

I believe that learning should be fun and meaningful and I want the students I work with to be inspired and engaged in their own learning process. When possible I prefer to use hands-on learning techniques. I encourage students to ask questions and make connections to the world around them. It is through constructing this knowledge that students will be able to think logically and transfer their knowledge to new situations. Through developing a meaningful relationship with each student I work with, I better understand her needs, interests and motivations and can support her learning. Through mutual respect, I can help a student to achieve at higher levels and reach her potential.
