A Little Bit About Me...

I began my teaching experience in childhood. My favorite game was school and I would always be the teacher or preacher when we played church,my other favorite game. I grew up went to college and received an Associates in liberal arts, a Bachelor's with a double major of English and Psychology and Master's in Education with certifications to teach both English and Psychology for grades 7-12 in the state of Michigan. I worked 11 years for Grand Rapids Public School district as a substitute teacher and full time teacher. For the past several years I have been raising my 11 year old granddaughter and have primarily worked from home.

I was born to teach. From 10 years old I would teach my friends during summer vacations or whenever I could get them to play my favorite game, school, (Kids don't play school anymore). I enjoy helping students make the connections. I use a teaching approach that is hands on and generally seeks to find atudents learning style. I know that all children can learn, it is sometimes a matter of how they learn that becomes a barrier. I am very sensitive students need to feel empowered, hence I seek to teach the students skills that eventually lead to not needing me or any other tutor.

I have most of my experience working with English language learners. Over the past year I have worked with English language learners that came from varied backgrounds such as, university aged Korean students, adult Russian speakers, adult Ukrainian speakers, and adult, middle, and elementary aged Spanish speakers. I really enjoy speaking other languages, which is why I majored in Linguistics and French. I received my TESOL certification in Querétaro Mexico this summer where I also studied Spanish and became rather proficient. As a linguist I understand language at a very primary level and can explain complex concepts using simple but not “watered down” language.

I began to realize my love and aptitude for tutoring as a volunteer Japanese instructor for the Daikin home-stay program in 2006. The next two years I volunteered my time with Rosie's International Services tutoring Spanish. At the beginning of the Spring 2008 semester, the Head of the Foreign Language Department, Dr. Maier, submitted my name to a tutoring department at UAH, where I worked tutoring Spanish, Japanese, Latin, Chinese, and English as a Second Language until I graduated in Spring 2010.
