A Little Bit About Me...

My classrooms involve learning-centered groups in a workshop approach. I find that students are encouraged by the examples of other writers and learners at their own levels. I provide a great deal of individual feedback on assignments. I encourage the imitation of examples in writing and the discovery of other writing styles. I am sensitive to the needs and learning needs of each student.
I have always been a reader and a writer. In my degree work, I learned how to inspire others to read critically and write well. I have many years experience as a college-level instructor. I also work locally with high school students at my church. In addition, I have worked at Writing Centers at several institutions. I also have helped with successful grant writing for several local organizations.

I have a great deal of experience in educating students. I have earned my BA from Northern Illinois University in Communications, and I also have earned my MAT from Rockford College in Education. I have had my Type-03 Elementary Teaching Certificate since April of 2009. I have worked as a special education aide, student taught sixth grade language arts, and in the past year I have been a substitute teacher in Winnebago and Ogle County. I have taken many classes in reading, writing, and grammar. I have learned different ways to learn, as well as as different ways to teach and I would enjoy sharing my knowledge.
I love using different styles of teaching to see which way each individual learns best. I believe all students are capable of learning the same curriculum, but may need to be shown or approached in different ways. Some students may need a hands-on approach and some ... read more

In the time that I’ve spent tutoring Spanish, what I’ve always found to be true is that in order to succeed, a student needs to have an approach to the material that works for them on a personal level. Whether that means amassing small mountains of flash cards or listening to Spanish-language podcasts or trying to equate Spanish verb conjugations with English, every student has something that works for them. It’s just a matter of finding it.
Although the bulk of my tutoring experience has been with university students (two years), providing instruction in basic, mid-level and advanced Spanish coursework, I feel there are a few others worth mentioning. From February to November of 2010, I worked for a non-profit in Bolivia as both a translator and a tutor in a home for children aged 5-13. Several years before when in high school, I worked as a trombone instructor for elementary and ... read more

My teaching style inists of utilizing all aspects of learning. Visual elements are incorporated into a study to help students conceptualize and memorize the highlights of our session. I believe in positive reinforcement and repetition as tools to assist growth in the subject. I also believe that each student is an individual and unique person with diverse interests which can be used to make the lesson more interesting to them.
I am a master's degree graduate of American University in Washington, D.C. I have worked in higher education alongside professors and communications staff. A Little Bit About Me...

When I am teaching I am very patient and try to organize the lesson or my assistance in steps. I'll have the child read the problem or question, ask what they know about it, see if they understand the question and proceed. The patient style helps me see what the student's strengths and weaknesses are so I know what they need to practice and focus on. If the child has multiple assignments or tasks I have them perform the more difficult ones first. Starting with the easy assignments may seem like it makes sense but I would prefer that the student have more energy for the tasks they'll have more difficulty with.
During my high school years I would volunteer to help children through various charities and church. When I attended college I became an Early Childhood Education major and volunteered in preschool and elementary schools. During my Student Teaching in Des Plaines I was in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As an active member of my community, in the form of pageantry, volunteering, and leadership, I have always enjoyed instructing others. Currently, I love my job at Midwest Generation as an Instructional Designer of Training. I get to train Engineers and Office Managers on subjects I knew little about, and have grown in responsibility and development. I love kids, since my summer camp instruction job I held all throughout High School as well as an active instructor at my church. I just graduated from Illinois State University about a year ago, and am recently educated and knowledgeable in all subjects, especially English, Social Studies, and Math. I also have five years of French studies.

More About This Tutor...

I was taught in my Sweetland Writing Center courses to teach with a non-directive approach, and allow students to do most of the talking and thinking throughout the tutoring session. This is primarily accomplished through the use of leading and probing questions, functioning to spark the student's thinking. I also frequently explain technical issues of grammar, and other higher order concerns within papers; they need to be able to understand the problem before they can tackle the solution. Furthermore, I was specially trained at University of Michigan to help ESL students. I aim to make the student a better writer and thinker, rather than aiming to fix each paper before me.
I am a recent graduate of the University of Michigan, and will receive my diploma on August of 2010. I managed to accomplish four years of intensive school work in three years, which is a testament to my work-et ... read more

My teaching style could not be better described than to quote Ignacio Estrada, “If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” I believe we are all granted certain talents and gifts and sometimes we just need that little bit of guidance to reach deep down and find how we can be our very best. Let me help your child reach his or her full potential. In addition to being a patient and caring tutor, I teach with empathy. I appreciate how children can feel a loss of confidence in themselves, especially when their peers are excelling at a time they are not. In a positive and nurturing environment, I will help your child build confidence in his or her abilities, aligning the path for academic achievement.
My B.A. is in History and Social Behavioral Science. This encompasses Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Economics and Political Science. After g ... read more
