Special Tutor/Teacher

I try to teach by the style that seems to be the best for that student to learn. I am very patient and realize that each student takes a varied amount of time to grasp material. Hands on materials and fun activities are great ways to keep the student engaged.
I have taught school for 29 1/2 years in Special Education . My positions were in Preschool Special Needs, Elementary Special Needs, and High School Occupational Course of Study. I have taught in both SC and NC. I love teaching preschool -elementary students. I have always had a passion for teaching because both of my grandmothers and my mother were teachers. I have wanted to help others learn for as long as I can remember; even as early as the fourth grade I was helping my classmates with assignments. I have always loved learning and helping others to learn. I earned a BS in Psychology in college so I would have a better understanding of how the mind works and learns. I never turned a person down; if I did not know much about a subject I would research it. I even took a course that would teach me how to assist individuals with essays and research papers. I have tutored students in many subjects mostly focusing on psychology including many different areas such as introduction, statistics and experimental design. I have also tutored in biology, history, math, and basic computer skills.
I do not have a particular style of teaching. I prefer to talk to the individual I am tutoring and together discover the best way to teach them the ... read more

Since working with the disabled folks I have learned patience is a virtue. I also learned that each person is very unique and learns in different ways. I will meet your child's individual needs and try to show them a subject matter from a different point of view. I strongly believe that if a subject matter is presented in a more fun, exciting way to the student, it becomes more interesting and the child is given the chance to not only memorize material, but more importantly to internalize it.
As a graduate from an accredited college, I have learned and excelled as a science major. I have earned a BA in Biology, which has enabled me to obtain a well rounded education, which focused on math and science. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills throughout my educational experience in writing laboratory reports, research papers, and on my own study I, myself conduc ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that each child learns in a different way, and as a teacher it is my challenge and duty to teach in such a way, to approach the problem from enough different angles, that each student would understand the concept at hand. I love that challenge. I am easy going, patient, and I relate well to children. I look forward to learning with and from each student I encounter.
In 2002 I graduated with a degree in biotechnology. During the last semester of school, I was a substitute teacher, where I learned a lot about children and different teaching styles. After graduation, I pursued a career as a chemist, but I always maintained a second part-time job teaching, in some fashion. Usually, that teaching involved a pool. I have been a swimming lesson instructor for 10 years and have been a YMCA swim coach for 3 seasons, coaching over 200 children per year. In these opportunit ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I recently relocated to the Huntersville area. I recently graduated from UNCW with a degreee in Psychology with a focus on children. Since middle school, working with children has been my passion. I realized my dream after some of my cousins came over to America from the war torn country of Liberia and were having a very hard time adjusting. I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill's Master's Program for Rehabilitation but declined after fearing it would take me down the path of working with the elderly instead of working with children. I have very extensive experience working with children at camps, researching at UNCW, tutoring foster children, and special needs with Lindley Habilitation services in Wilmington (mainly working with a client having Hunter's syndrome who was learning sign language, etc). I am both CPR and first aid certified. I have used all my knowledge of math (especially st ... read more

I enjoy teaching and it is such a joy to see "the light come on" in a child's mind. I believe children all learn in different ways and a great teacher will find the best way for each child to learn. The goal I have always strived for is that all of my students love school and love learning. Then it is easier to meet all of the goals placed by our society and school system.
I have taught in the classroom for children from pre-school age to third grade. After receiving training from the state of NC for child care credentials, I also have taught adults at a community college. I have occasionally worked part-time tutoring students in reading and math.
