Special Tutor/Teacher

I try to teach by the style that seems to be the best for that student to learn. I am very patient and realize that each student takes a varied amount of time to grasp material. Hands on materials and fun activities are great ways to keep the student engaged.
I have taught school for 29 1/2 years in Special Education . My positions were in Preschool Special Needs, Elementary Special Needs, and High School Occupational Course of Study. I have wanted to help others learn for as long as I can remember; even as early as the fourth grade I was helping my classmates with assignments. I have always loved learning and helping others to learn. I earned a BS in Psychology in college so I would have a better understanding of how the mind works and learns. I never turned a person down; if I did not know much about a subject I would research it. I even took a course that would teach me how to assist individuals with essays and research papers. Since working with the disabled folks I have learned patience is a virtue. I also learned that each person is very unique and learns in different ways. I will meet your child's individual needs and try to show them a subject matter from a different point of view. I strongly believe that if a subject matter is presented in a more fun, exciting way to the student, it becomes more interesting and the child is given the chance to not only memorize material, but more importantly to internalize it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that each child learns in a different way, and as a teacher it is my challenge and duty to teach in such a way, to approach the problem from enough different angles, that each student would understand the concept at hand. I recently relocated to the Huntersville area. I recently graduated from UNCW with a degreee in Psychology with a focus on children. Since middle school, working with children has been my passion. I realized my dream after some of my cousins came over to America from the war torn country of Liberia and were having a very hard time adjusting. I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill's Master's Program for Rehabilitation but declined after fearing it would take me down the path of working with the elderly instead of working with children. I enjoy teaching and it is such a joy to see "the light come on" in a child's mind. I believe children all learn in different ways and a great teacher will find the best way for each child to learn. The goal I have always strived for is that all of my students love school and love learning. Then it is easier to meet all of the goals placed by our society and school system.
