A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate from an accredited college, I have learned and excelled as a science major. I have earned a BA in Biology, which has enabled me to obtain a well rounded education, which focused on math and science. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills throughout my educational experience in writing laboratory reports, research papers, and on my own study I, myself conducted. For the past six years I have worked with challenged children and adults all subject areas. I am very hands on, so I like to take my students outside and let them touch and feel things we are learning about. I can teach all subject areas and will probably begin a Masters program for teaching next fall.

In 2002 I graduated with a degree in biotechnology. During the last semester of school, I was a substitute teacher, where I learned a lot about children and different teaching styles. After graduation, I pursued a career as a chemist, but I always maintained a second part-time job teaching, in some fashion. Usually, that teaching involved a pool. I have been a swimming lesson instructor for 10 years and have been a YMCA swim coach for 3 seasons, coaching over 200 children per year. In these opportunities, I've learned a lot about interacting with children. I am also a trainer for my coworkers and new employees who join our team. Throughout High School and College, I excelled in Math and Science, and use many of the concepts that I learned each day in the laboratory.

A Little Bit About Me...

I do not have a particular style of teaching. I prefer to talk to the individual I am tutoring and together discover the best way to teach them the subject material. I believe that everyone learns information at a different pace and that some information is easier to process than other information. I believe that individuals should be comfortable while learning in order for them to actually learn. I would never force someone to learn "my way" and would work with them on developing a way that works for both of us. I would also focus on teaching proper study habits so the individuals can apply them and possibly not need a tutor in the future.

I enjoy teaching and it is such a joy to see "the light come on" in a child's mind. I believe children all learn in different ways and a great teacher will find the best way for each child to learn. The goal I have always strived for is that all of my students love school and love learning. Then it is easier to meet all of the goals placed by our society and school system.

Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 years while I worked for Tryon Elementary school. I had great success with the students I worked with, in particular concerning math. I am very qualified to work in a tutoring capacity.
I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them.
