For five years I taught swimming lessons. While swimming isnotan academic subject, this experience taught me the essentials of teaching. I worked with a large range of ages, from six months to sixty years. While in college I was a tutor/editor in the writing center all three years. Upon graduation I took two part time jobs tutoring English at elementary and secondary levels, at Knowledge Points of Tampa Bay and Lindamood- Bell learning processes of South Tampa.
I rely heavily on Socratic questioning, to strengthen the students own thinking; my goal is for him/her to not need me. I believe that authenticity is the key to relating to people--especically children. Children are drawn to me because they sense my kindness and compassion. Equally important is my belief that evereyone learns differently. There is no right or wrong way to learn. A "slow" learner is not "stupid" or deficient in any way. They just have to be accomodating in an alternative manner. I believe that a teacher must adapt to the child's style of learning. Demonstrating to a child that you believe in them can be the most powerful teaching tool there is.

I like to encourage and support my students. Many students don’t want to learn or do not feel they can succeed. When a student is positive and feels that sense of pride; he will open himself up more to the idea of learning. Secondly, I will always do readings and visuals to stimulate both areas of the brain to ensure it is absorbed. I also believe in repetition of information once a student comprehends what has been learned. Lastly, I like to be consistent. I have always kept the learning styles very similar. As an avid tutor I was required to follow the avid tutoring format. Before I joined the program I was unaware of what exactly this entailed. The avid program suggests groups of 5-7 students gather around a table with the avid tutor being placed at the head of the table. My job is not to tutor, but to rather facilitate the learning as students take turns proposing a tutorial question. This proved difficult because several instances I felt the need to "break" the rules in order to truly help a student.
