For five years I taught swimming lessons. While swimming isnotan academic subject, this experience taught me the essentials of teaching. I worked with a large range of ages, from six months to sixty years. While in college I was a tutor/editor in the writing center all three years. Upon graduation I took two part time jobs tutoring English at elementary and secondary levels, at Knowledge Points of Tampa Bay and Lindamood- Bell learning processes of South Tampa.
I rely heavily on Socratic questioning, to strengthen the students own thinking; my goal is for him/her to not need me. I believe that authenticity is the key to relating to people--especically children. Children are drawn to me because they sense my kindness and compassion. Equally important is my belief that evereyone learns differently. There is no right or wrong way to learn. A "slow" learner is not "stupid" or deficient in any way. They just have to be accomodating in an alternative manner. I believe that a teacher must adapt to the child's style of learning. Demonstrating to a child that you believe in them can be the most powerful teaching tool there is.

I hold a degree in special education which focused on the needs of learning disabled students, though required I still maintain the same knowledge of a licensed educator. I call myself an "edutainer." I dress very well and I'm very, very funny. When I began teaching Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet skills to senior citizens at Brevard Community College, the directors were concerned that my students needed lots of breaks to go to the bathroom, etc. In actuality, none of my students ever leaves the room. My teaching style varies with who I am working with. With my high school students, I will introduce a new lesson or concept, model how to comprehend it, work with them on a few examples, and then allow them independent practice to work alone. With my GED Prep classes, I tend to let each student work at his own pace and I’m available for questions and clarifications. I can adapt to whatever my students need.
