I believe in teaching by example. I know especially in chemistry, examples help see the proper technique and variables needed to solve the problem. I feel that if a student is memorizing an equation but does not understand the process of finding and filling in variables, this will not help them get to the correct answer. A student need to dissect the equation in order to understand what exactly a problem is looking for. It took me many year to understand this process, but once I did I found that I could solve almost any problem that was presented to me in the field of chemistry. As a Mad Scientist, I learned how to make learning science fun. I like to spend a session with my students learning their background and their learning style. My students have always appreciated my ability to look at problems and subjects from different angles. I like to use every day metaphors for teaching math problems and also try to teach students how to use a "process of elimination" style. For example, it is easier to identify whether or not an object is a cell phone by picking out one trait that a cell phone has and determining if the object has that trait rather than describing all the traits of the object and then determining if it is a cell phone.
