A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in teaching by example. I know especially in chemistry, examples help see the proper technique and variables needed to solve the problem. I feel that if a student is memorizing an equation but does not understand the process of finding and filling in variables, this will not help them get to the correct answer. A student need to dissect the equation in order to understand what exactly a problem is looking for. It took me many year to understand this process, but once I did I found that I could solve almost any problem that was presented to me in the field of chemistry. I hope to pass this knowledge on to my students.

While obtaining my chemistry degree at Butler, I also completed all requirements for a secondary education license with the exception of student teaching and worked as a math and science tutor with a private tutoring service in Indianapolis. I also was a "Mad Science" instructor, teaching after school programs to grades k-12 in science. Upon graduation, I worked as a medicinal chemist for 5 year and attended law school at night. I completed my law degree in 2006 and now currently work at Vanderbilt University negotiating research agreements. I recently taught test prep course for Sherwood Test Prep-but disliked the format of the classes. I prefer to tutor one on one with students and look forward to getting back into tutoring math and science on a regular basis, not only for extra income, but to get back to my teaching roots.

Although drill may be appropriate for some skills, my preference is project or problem based methods that draw on the learner's experiences and interests. I work from students' current skill levels, provide challenging problems, model successful learning skills, encourage students' to express creativity and intuition, and employ formative and normative assessments.
