My comments on tutoring Drawing : As an artist, I am able to work with students on the technical skills and methods of drawing or their overall approach. I have taken many drawing classes and would be delighted to share what I have learned with others!

I have tutored a wide variety students on many subjects. I am most experienced tutoring high school students for the SAT. I worked with Let's Get Ready, a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing high school students for the SAT and their college search process. I typically tutored students for the Math section, but I am capable of tutoring for the Critical Reading and Writing sections as well. Some of my other tutoring experiences have been with middle and high school students. I have tutored several students in math, from middle school level general math to high school Calculus I. I have worked with younger students to improve their grammar and writing abilities. Furthermore, I have had a lot of less formal tutoring experiences with classmates through out my education. For many reasons, I usually do well in my classes and have often been asked to share my knowledge with other ... read more

I am very passionate about the job career I have chosen at the University of Florida. I take pride in being a highly qualified educator by being exposed to the best practices to teach in the classroom. I want each child to become life long learners and set them up for success in the outside world. I have experience teaching lessons in different teaching styles. I know the importance of being patient with students and finding the best way that they can learn something. My goal as a tutor is to help your child learn skills that they can apply to different subject areas. I truly want the children who I tutor to have fun learning.

I believe all students can learn but some need explicit strategies to be shown to them. Research shows students who fail often have less background knowledge, remember less, their attention wanders and they lack automaticity, the ability to recall basic facts. I have a tool box full of research proven strategies that work. Discovery learning is not what kids in remediation need. These kids need to be shown specific ways to organize information so they can tell what is important to learn, study skills to recall information, and ways to connect new information to their background knowledge.
As a teacher trainer for the past 7 years, I have taught teachers research based instructional strategies to help struggling learners as well as applied these concepts in my own classroom. I really like working with children from low income families. I think each child has a different interest and way of learning. I try to discover these learning styles before I begin the tutoring process. I try to allow them to be comfortable and having fun during our sessions. Most of the time I do a lot of question/conversation responses to allow them to find the answer for themselves. I like a problem based learning style, even for the youngest of children. I not only want to teach them how to properly concur their learning material but how to find the information they need if they do not know the answer. Additionally, I want them to have fun and enjoy quality time with a supportive mentor and gain an enthusiasm for school.

My teaching style is geared more towards each individual child. Some are auditory learners, some learn just by watching and still others require tactile stimulation in order to learn. I generally use a combination of all three focusing on the one that is strongest for each individual child. I believe with patience and understanding all children can and will learn. I have had wondeful teachers myself and strive to pattern myself after them to make a significant difference in each child's life. I look fondly back at those teachers because they have molded me to the person I am today.

I believe that tutoring is a great way to assist teachers. The reason I say this is because teachers often have many children in their classes and as a tutor I would be able to work one on one with a child who might need a little extra attention. I also thing that when children are given a chance to grasp difficult ideas they gain self confidence and become encouraged to persevere. I also believe that children can learn to love learning, and a child who is given the chance to be encouraged in their learning they will develop a love to the act of learning and therefore become life long learners. I believe in the ability of children and look forward to working with them in a way that will give them confidence and encouragement to work hard and succeed in school.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a very patient, dedicated, and energetic person. I like to incorporate riddles, rhymes, and games into my tutoring sessions to aid kids in learning. It is my belief that all kids can learn. As a child I was told I would never surpass an elementary school because I was failing to thrive. There were so many people who believed in me and as a result I incorporate the same mindset they had with me to contribute to the successes of children who are much like I was.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is very hands on. I believe that children learn best when they are afforded the opportunity to learn through a tangible means. I enjoy learning, and therefore try to instill that same appreciation for learning in those in which I have had the opportunity to teach. The most important lesson that I teach any of my students is related to helping them discover the ways in which they learn best. Only then can the ongoing process of learning begin.

A BA and an MA in French provide me with the knowledge. Experience as a former teaching assistant and as a current online tutor give me the skills necessary to teach. Writing numerous papers in both French and English taught me the mechanics involved in language. I use all of these insights to enrich students' prospective experiences. In addition to reading and writing, I also tutor math up to Algebra II.
Although schooled in the Communicative Method in second language acquisition, my teaching styles are varied, fluid and dependent upon the individual student and subject. Along with patience, understanding will create an environment conducive to learning.
