I have participated in many study groups where I actively contribute information on the topic of interest; there we help each other and teach each other. Also, I'm the oldest sibling of four, I have had many years of helping out with homework and tutoring in reading, writing and math. My education consisted of diverse studies and I learned a great deal of mathematics and sciences. Also, naturally I use proper grammar and have a good hand for writing. I am a very creative person and can come up with unique topics. I'm also very artsy and appreciate a good hands on experiment.

Physics is one of my top subjects!

As a masters degree holding physicist I have an extensive background in both physics and mathematics. Additionally, as a published author and the author of many research papers and lab reports I have considerable grammatical skills, and writing experience. My whole educational career tutoring my classmates and siblings has come as second nature to me, but I have had official teaching assistant and course assistant roles in helping edit student essays, and in introductory physics courses. Additionally, I have tutored students in astronomy, chemistry, history of science, and mathematics at levels ranging from basic arithmetic to calculus. I also have considerable experience with standardized testing, drawing and painting.
I am a calm, patient, and easy-going person who loves learning and loves helping others to learn. I enjoy adapting to different learning styles, and want to h ... read more

No drudgery!

Student-led and interactive. No lectures. No drudgery. I focus on the process of solving problems. Restate the question. Draw diagrams. Figure out what information is missing. How can I get that information? Can it be calculated or is an estimate good enough? What sources are reliable?
I solve problems. I am a bioanalytical chemist and biomedical engineer. This profession requires using math, statistics, biology and chemistry at a high level on a daily basis as I develop products that improve healthcare. I have taught or tutored science and math from elementary to post-college level for over 25 years in diverse settings.

My comments on tutoring Physics : Took both college-level, calculus-based, general physics courses. Topics: Newton's laws, angular motion, kinematics, inertia, momentum, electrical, magnetic, and basic concepts involving circuit boards.

Asking students about problem areas so I can make a quiz to see what fundamentals are missing. Can help with homework and test preparation too.
Tutored on TutorSelect.come before a few years back and successfully tutored over ten individual students as well as a couple of group sessions with in between 2 and 4 students. All the students I tutored were either in high school or college. My topic I predominately tutor and that I most enjoy tutoring is mathematics. I've taken Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, all three college Calculus courses, and Differential Equations. I also took both college-level General Chemistry courses and both calculus-based Physics courses. I also was responsible in most of my classes for developing a weekly schedule for tutoring/studying course topics with fellow classmates and friends. Professional Exam Prep and Subject Tutoring

During my time as Head Tutor at UNCA, regardless of department, I tutored over 200 students in mathematics and physics. Of those students, at least 80% saw an increase of at least one letter grade and at least 20% saw an increase by two letter grades. Many students I tutored in one subject came back to be for tutoring in the other. For many of my students I served as an invaluable mentor who guided them from their earliest days as a college freshman to the day the walked across the stage and earned their degree. Over the past five years, I have helped more than 100 students gain admission to their dream colleges and have averaged a score increase of approximately 260 points for the SAT and 6.5 points for the ACT. I have personally played a role in the lives of students who have earned admission into such institutions as Stanford, Duke, UVA, Cal Tech, Georgia Tech, UNC, and UPenn. ... read more

I am very hands on teaching style. I make sure I cater to each of my students individually. I offer my students the encouragement and respect they deserve and treat them with kindness. I adjust for visual, hearing, and hands-on learners. I put a lot of pride in my work and I am not satisfied until the student has a firm grip of the subject matter.

I have more than 35 years of experience in both research and teaching physics and math. I have extensive experience in tutoring students in physics and math, mentoring undergraduates in research, and in supervising of graduate students and PhD candidates (have mentored the seven PhD students). Presently, I am retired senior scientist from the Physics Department of Purdue University.
My personal teaching philosophy includes: Treating all students with absolute equality, regardless of age, gender, nationality, intellectual ability or personal attractiveness. The vast majority of students are capable of learning a large amount and achieving high quality. They are not motivated enough to participate up to their capacity. I attempt to motivate students to learn not by fear, but by involvement. A learning environment for students is a safe environment where students can ... read more

My general teaching style is whole-person and learner-centered, with an approach tailored to each student's individual needs, aptitude and attitude. I blend traditional and modern teaching methodologies that engage mind, body and senses in the process of content discovery and mastery. In my math/physics tutoring practice, these methods include drills, common-sense reasoning, humor, micro-lecture, guided imagery, teacher-student role reversal, kinesthetic investigation, and use of table-top manipulatives and color-coded equations, graphs and diagrams. I select specific tools and techniques in consultation with my students, incorporating their individual preferences and their own sense of what best helps them learn. Enthusiasm rules!
My professional tutoring experience began in 1986, when I started work as a graduate teaching assistant in physics. Since then I have taught physics and ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have both formal and informal tutoring experience. As a high-achieving student throughout high-school and college, I was often approached by other students and parents for academic advice and tutoring requests. Through these informal sessions in combination with the formal tutoring program sponsored by the university, I gained experience tutoring students in Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Accounting, Physics, and Composition.
I believe individual learning styles dictate information processing; for this reason, I find it necessary to first identify whether a child is a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. Armed with this knowledge and properly adjusted material presentation, a child is capable of learning anything. I fully respect each child's individuality and approach every teaching session with the expectation that through patience and cooperation, we will conquer the material ... read more

My teaching style is a mixture of direct instruction and discovery based learning whose components depend on the student(s) at hand. I've been known to make generalized lesson plans and improvise as I go, because every class is different, and too strict of a plan is destructive and boring for the students. Students typically need things explained to them in many different ways to garner a solid understanding of any topic, but especially upper level math and physics. Therefore, I pride myself on using any props, explanations, or examples that I can come up with to get the point across. At the same time, I tailor each lesson to the speed of the student(s) and the time constraints of the situation, varying the amount of direct vs. discovery learning accordingly, and making sure that the lines of communication between myself and the student are wide open so I can continually assess their ... read more
