I am currently completing my final year at Vanderbilt Law School. Over the past three years, I have taught a class and provided one-on-one tutoring for students preparing to take the LSAT. After twenty-five years in book and magazine publishing, I decided to do something that mattered, so I went back to school, got a master's degree, and began teaching. I've been teaching college English for the last ten years, as well as writing poetry -- some of which gets published. I also tutor students in how to write their college application essays. I've published poetry, a novel, short stories, and a short collection of essays.
Writing is thinking. If I can get my students to think, I can get them to write better. One of the most important things a teacher of Language Arts can get a student to do is write. The more a student writes, the more in tune they become with their own style of expression. This not only aids in prose development, but also communication in all forms. I believe that all children are capable of understanding parts of speech and writing well. Each has his own learning style and I pride myself in being patient enough to discover what each student needs.

I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding.
