Experienced, unconventional Latin and English teacher

I have over 20 years of experience working as a university instructor and private teacher for students ages 11-50. Most of my experience has been in English as a Second Language programs for community colleges and research universities, including M.I.T. and Tufts University. For the past several years I have been assisting middle and high school students with Latin (I have studied over 11 years of that language) and have also tutored beginning German and English writing.
Personal, humorous, and energetic. I tailor games and activities to each class and do not think teaching directly from a text inspires many to learn. I was always interested in the Spanish language. My family had a Spanish housekeeper. She was like a grandmother and why I chose to take Spanish. Then I had a Spanish teacher who encouraged me to continue learning and I did. I studied a semester abroad in Costa Rica and lived there for 2 years, immersing myself in the language and becoming more fluent. To live down there I became certified in teaching English as a foreign language. During my 2 years in Costa Rica I worked for many institutes teaching students of varying ages and ability levels. Upon returning to the USA I was hired by Southwestern Community College and worked for 3 years as a part time ESL instructor.

I received my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University where I also received training in education. After receiving a B.S. degree in elementary education (1-8) and an ESL certification, I taught K-6 for 13 years. After that, I was a math consultant for one year. For the next 6 years, I tested, diagnosed, and wrote psycho-educational reports for students to see if they qualified for placement in special education classes and set up their individual educational programs.
