I earned two bachelor degrees from the University of North Carolina in December of 2007. From there, I chose to move to Massachusetts to participate in a ground breaking fellowship at MATCH Charter Public High School. I chose this alternate route to receiving teaching certification because of the classroom experience it provided me. In addition to earning certification and completing student teaching hours, I tutored for 20-30 hours a week in all subject areas in grades 9, 10, and 11. You also must find their passion. With this information (passion and learning style), you can help any student succeed. Many of my students have been considered as slow, but once I began working with them, I realized that they just lacked the basic skills. Because I am a Business major, I tend to like to work with only numbers. But my tutoring career began with kids that were below grade level in reading. So I used my business mindset to give my young clients(students) stories that were of interest to them and I made sure that the stories were easy reading and I gradually got the kids to read "at grade level". I also believe that most people are smart. i've had high school students who read at a 3rd grade level--but they were smart when addressing subjects of interest to them.
