Ryan H. - Seattle, WA 98115 (26 mi) - German Tutor - $40.00/hr.
It was a round-about path that I followed to the study of German. I've always had an especial passion for Germanic philology, but it was the long-dead or extinct sister tongues of the modern language that I pursued first, spending my time primarily with Gothic and Old English.
Over time my curiosity about New High German grew, however, and eventually I decided to try my hand at something more modern. I was fortunate enough to find a delightful little grammar while exploring the nooks and crannies of a bookstore in my hometown, and after working through the volume I opted to supplement it with a German course at college; on the whole the grammar was a far more comprehensive guide, but the class helped to round out my lexicon with a firmer grasp of the language in its more colloquial moods.
On the whole I've found German to be a true delight, and over the years I've striven to keep

Nathaniel W - Kent, WA 98035 (12.1 mi) - German Tutor - $43.50/hr.
I believe that instilling the confidence to learn is the key to effective instruction. Students need confidence not only in their instructor’s mastery of the subject matter, but also in their own ability to gain their own such master. This is not to suggest that rigor should not be applied, but rather that a student must have an emotional engagement with the learning process and a sense of their own progress, however minimal it might seem at a particular time. Frustration is the primary obstacle to successful learning and overcoming it is the instructor’s chief task. From 2005 to 2008 I worked as a teacher and tutor for a Seattle-based test preparation firm. I taught classes for the SAT and GRE and tutored the SAT, GRE, and ACT. I believe I met and exceeded the high standards set by this organization. In 2008 I worked as a regional field director for the Obama campaign in several states,

Daniel B - Tacoma, WA 98405 (24.3 mi) - German Tutor - $39.50/hr.
As a tutor, I work through problems/passages with a student to determine weak points to address and to find ways for the student to connect with the subject matter. Once I determine a student’s interests and academic strengths, I present new concepts in ways that make more sense to the student and hopefully interest him or her more. Because many students falter due to lack of motivation, I also believe that it is vital to a student’s continued success to explain how an understanding of the subjects he/she is studying will allow him/her to reach goals for high school, college, and beyond. My ultimate goal is to help a student come to regard academic success as something of which he or she is capable. I attended Foss H.S. in Tacoma and was awarded the International Baccalaureate diploma with the highest cumulative score in my class. I then attended the University of Chicago, where I ea

John E - Gig Harbor, WA 98332 (29.8 mi) - German Tutor - $48.00/hr.
Since completing my formal degree training I have worked in several capacities in the field of education. I taught inner-city young adults in Washington, D.C. in all GED subjects. I worked as a Guidance Counselor and Education Services Officer for the Army for eight years. In the past two years I have tutored under the auspices of Tacoma Community College in all GED subjects. Prior to my work with TCC I tutored in the Kid Reach program for three years. I try to match my own teaching style with the learning style of the student with whom I am working, paying particular attention to language and vocabulary usage. I also strive to emulate my favorite math teacher's ability to think out loud in teaching any kind of problem solving task.
