In Writing... I generally give my students a mild assessment to see how I can best help them. I also conduct all of my own lesson planning. However, I am certainly accustomed to helping students with current academic work they may already have from their current classes. The first thing that I typically help students do is get pass the creativity block (if needed). Even I, like all writers have suffered from the inability to start my essay because I didn't know what to write about or how to collect ideas for my topic. Post-pubescent persons have a great capacity to learn abstract material; all that is necessary to open that potential is to motivate them. I do not specialize in that motivation. I do, however, excel at taking a puzzled student and explaining the difficult material in a way that makes sense to him or her. My father was my first math mentor. He graduated from West Point - and tutored his roommate John Saxon. John developed the Saxon method. The next influencer was Investigations - the math program used at West School in New Canaan, CT where I did my student teaching. That program taught me to do "break apart" math - which teaches math independence.
