As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead. Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. The key to helping a student to retain information is to make certain that student possesses all the prior knowledge needed to support the new information. For example, it is very difficult to teach a student the concept of the passive verb voice if that student does not understand the difference between a verb and other parts of speech.
