A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent graduate of the University of South Alabama, College of Education. I returned to school to earn a teaching certificate in elementary education so that I might expand my career in environmental science as an educator. I have completed two semesters of student teaching, one semester in classroom observation/aide, and one semester as a reading tutor. In addition to these degree requirements, I have been an activity presenter at the Baldwin County Water Festival for the past four years. I have always enjoyed working with students one-on-one. To teach effectively one must understand what motivates the individual, and the only way to do that is to spend time with that person. If a student is a visual learner, I will use visual aids to illustrate the lesson. If a student is an auditory learner, I will concentrate on lecture or video instruction. The key to student learning is to engage the student's interest. And of course, practice is essential when learning a skill, so I give students the opportunity to practice each skill and receive feedback, which helps guide the student into beneficial change and growth.

The key to good teaching is adaptability. First and foremost I believe that every individual can learn but we all have different learning styles. Some individuals may learn better using visual learning, others process information better from aural input. I believe in both problem-based learning using hands-on application but also realize that skills such as reading and literacy require some more traditional methods such as phonics approaches to reading. Following the birth of my third child, I taught at her pre-school and caught the teaching "bug". I then completed a graduate program in Elementary Education, taught for one year in the public school system in Florida and then taught for one year in Alabama. I have the ability to help children struggling in reading to make great strides and as a result, gain the self-confidence to do well in school.
