My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting problem sets. There is so much interesting literature, philosophy, and history in the fields of science and physics that it makes very little sense to muddle with these less helpful and dull techniques and problems. Physics and math education has become so perforated with cliche that shows like Cosmos and the elegant universe can become hits by just regurgitating the same buzz-theories (Schrodinger's cat, Black holes, the multiverse etc.) in the same, cloddish language (space-time is 'warped' and twisted, quantum 'weirdness', etc). This lack of original language and analogy is not a semantical issue; it's suggestive of the philistine cleaving of the sciences from the arts and it's very disturbing -- these truly awesome ... read more

I am a first year student at Stetson University. I skipped fifth grade, which is the reason I graduated early. I completed all four years of high school with A's, and only about 2-3 B's. My professional subject area is Mathematics. I took Advanced Placement Calculus 1 in my senior year, receiving a "Most Outstanding" award. I also have experience in areas such as Reading, Writing, English, and also projects. My freshman and sophomore year, I won first place in my school science fair, and my sophomore year also won in the district science fair. My high school had an AVID(Advance Via Individual Determination) program in which I helped as a tutor during school hours and also after school. If one needs help with science fair projects, research projects, presentations, etc, I am available. I have learned a lot of techniques in those areas in order for the result to be exceptional and eye catc

Lead the student to find the right answer himself or herself if possible. I have done private tutoring of high school students in math from pre-algebra to calculus and in other subjects. I have also home schooled adopted daughters from lower grades to high school level, including teaching English as a second language. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant in an electric machinery laboratory for non-electrical engineering majors. My own experience with standardized tests includes having taken the ACT in 1971 with scores ranging from 22 (76th percentile) in English to 31 (97th percentile) in math with a composite of 27 (93rd percentile) and having passed the GRE in 1975. Other previous experience includes 34 years experience as a communication system engineer. This experience includes satellite communications and other communications for the US military, NASA, FAA, and commerc

My teaching style is mostly relaxed, like a causal conversation. I have found people to be much more responsive to learning in this kind of atmosphere. I like to find out what my clients understanding level is, work with them towards strengthening that understanding, and use a verity of learning approaches to help them become self-sufficient in the area. "In the second grade my mom sent me to tutor. She was an older women and had once been a prominent local educator. She would sit me at her dining room table and have me do my homework while she watched soap operas in the next room. My experience was stagnant. I hated going to her house and I hated school work. In elementary and middle school, I was a C and D kind of student." "In the eighth grade we moved to a new city and I got a new tutor. It was at an after school program. Practice-Theory-Practice. I try to stay very focused on doing examples and practice problems. Some theory is necessary for a deep understanding, but it has to come at the right time. The student first needs some practice or at least an attempt to appreciate the process involved in solving a problem. Then I try and bring to light any issues and cover some theory. Then we do more practice. I helped many students who had previously given up hope to pass the CLAST exam and I taught the math portion of an SAT prep course through FGCU's CAA. I tutored LD students through Adaptive Services at FGCU I taught labs at FGCU for intermediate and college algebra, statistics and business calculus. I taught AP Calculus and AP Statistics at a private school. I taught Pre-calc and Algebra II through Lee County School District.

My teaching style is first of all to make all my students believe they can learn the materials. I'm patient, fair and easy going. I try to find how each student learn the best. I push my students to be the best they can. Math has always been my passion and I love to teach others. I've been a tutor since I was in High School. I received my AA at Edison college in Fort-Myers Florida in 2008. After that I went to University of Florida where I was a math tutor for a year. There, I tutored subject such as College Algebra, Trigonometry, calculus I, II and III.

As an Engineer major, I am interested in math and science in particular. I carried a 3.85 GPA throughout college, and earned a Golden Key International Honor Society award. I believe that working hard to achieve the top grades of your class will make you successful, and a good student. I enjoy working with children of all ages. I enjoy children who can appreciate being challenged, wanting to learn, and children who truly want to succeed. I always strive for the best. I believe anyone can meet their potential if they are willing and able to put the time, effort, and sacrifice into what they need.

While I attended Auburn University and studied civil engineering I found myself enjoying group projects and helping other students get through the difficult curriculum. I needed some extra money my junior year of school and since I was enjoying working with other students I decided to try tutoring freshman and sophomore students in math and physics. I enjoyed it and it was rewarding when the students grasped the lesson at hand and did well on their upcoming tests. I cannot say that I am set in any teaching style. I am green and haven’t exactly got a teaching style. I know through years of schooling and interacting with peers people learn differently and do better or worse depending on the teacher they have and that teachers style. I believe teaching methods in a tutorial environment need to be adaptive to the student. You’ll need to communicate with the student and feel him/her out and s

As a Chemical Enigineering graduate, I was exposed to many courses in higher level mathematics as well as all subject matter ranging from physics, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and biology. In addition, I have written many papers and essays, both scientific and artistic in nature. I have even been published in a scientific research journal as a co-author. For two years during college I tutored my fellow students in organic chemistry, averaging about 10 hours per week. My style is to give detailed examples and descriptions and then let the students try to work through the problems I have selected for them. Throughout a given session I coach the students by answering all their questions along the way and providing positive feedback. Through this method I hope for each student to increase their proficiency in the material by the end of the session. Each new session is begun wi

I enjoy the challenge of bringing the best out of a student's ability. My demeanor in the classroom is very calm and patient, which creates a relaxed atmosphere. I am a firm believer in keeping the students involved during my class and will frequently call on students to participate in solving problems. Every student has the ability to do well in school. I think it is just a matter of how badly they want to succeed and as a teacher I try to tap into their potential. I graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor's degree in secondary math education. During my internship in the fall of 2006, I taught Algebra 2 Honors and Geometry. Upon graduation, I was hired to teach Algebra IB at Lakeland High School and taught there for the spring semester of 2007. Due to my desire to be closer to my family in Charlotte County, I attended the Lee County Job Fair in April of 2007 and w

Everytime I see a student's eyes light up after learning something new or interesting to them it makes me feel like I have done something great. I am a very patient person and love helping students achieve academic success. When a student says to me that they need a little extra help with something it means that they want to learn and when a student wants to learn I am all for it. I want students to reach their highest potential and I will do what ever it takes, pulling from my adjuncting and substituting experiences, to help that student in anyway I can. I have a BA and MA in Communications, I was an adjunct professor in Communications as well as a substitute teacher in a high school. I will be starting the Teacher Immersion program at FGCU in the Summer. I am looking forward to teaching High School English and Speech, while doing Adjuncting at a local college. I have a lo

All through school I had an advanced understanding of math and i enjoyed helping others better understand it, for the past 5 years i have been offering tutoring to those in need. I have great understanding in everything up to and including statistics, algebra II, and some calculus. I have always seen math in a different way then those around me and have always been able to help others see the problems in a different light to better understand it. I take pride in my ability to help others understand even when they believe it will be hopeless
